Holiday Season is the time for "Safety"

The season of gift giving has arrived, starting with Thanksgiving and continuing through New Year’s Day. The act of giving embodies an expression of affection, often love. When you give a present that means something to someone you care about and that makes them feel happy, you share in their happiness throughout the entire experience. So while it is true that “it is better to give than to receive,” you nevertheless receive a wealth of joy with each gift you give.

Yet the most lasting holiday gift that you can give your loved ones – as well as yourself – is safety. According to the American Red Cross, Christmas trees cause nearly 500 deadly home fires every December in the United States. Here are some holiday safety reminders:

• Choose fire retardant holiday decorations whenever possible.
• Do not overload extension cords.
• Keep children and pets away from light strings and electrical decorations.
• Turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving the house or going to bed.
• Always keep lit candles away from flammable objects, never leave lit candles unattended, and do not place burning candles near an open window where a draft or breeze might topple them onto something flammable.
• Perhaps most important is to have a fire extinguisher in your house, readily available for putting out any fire.
