There are many stories about the History of Valentines day. It does seem like anyone knows for sure when it start.
One legend states that Valentine was a priest who served during the 3rd century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine realized the injustice and defied Claudius. He continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When he was discovered, Claudius had Valentine put to death.
