 Old Movies
December 25 2007

Because I don't enjoy current television shows much, I spend most of my TV viewing time looking at the channels like TCM that run old movies.  After a while, those films all blur together for me until I can remember only typical story lines for each genre.  Some examples are:

The Show Biz Movie:

From childhood, Larry has always wanted to be an entertainer. We see him work his way through acting classes and dancing school, then he spends years going to auditions, only to be rejected again and again. Finally, Larry lands the understudy role in a big Broadway show.  It's a bittersweet victory because the understudy almost never has a chance to perform in the real production.

On opening night, the star of the show falls ill suddenly and Larry gets to go on in his place. On stage, Larry sings and dances his heart out before a sell out crowd. This is his big break.  When the curtain falls, the audience is strangely silent.  Larry stumbles backstage and bumps into the stage manager.

"How did I do?" Larry asks.

"You were great, Kid," the manager says. "It's really too bad that your fly was open."

The Horrror Movie:

Tom is an American student who is attending college in London, England.  One morning, he wakes up to find that a mysterious plague seems to have changed everyone else in the city into a flesh eating zombie. Tom runs throught the streets in panic while zombies stream out from every building to chase him.  He runs into an alley, then finds out too late that it's a dead end. Tom cowers against a brick wall as the zombies advance on him.  This looks like the end.

Suddenly, a steel door in the wall behind him swings open and a voice says, "Quick! In here."

Tom jumps through the doorway and the steel door clangs shut behind him, leaving the growling zombie hordes outside.  Tom looks around and finds that he is surrounded by a goup of smiling strangers.

"I can't thank you all enough for saving me," Tom says.

"Don't mention it, Old Chap," says one of the strangers. "We werewolves hate it when those zombies steal our food."

The Love Story:

Victor and Gwen meet and fall in love while they are both on an ocean cruise.  They can't be together because Victor is still married to someone else.  Victor swears he will get a divorce and makes Gwen promise to meet him again, on New Year's Eve, at the top of The Empire State Building.

On New Year's Eve, Gwen is hurrying to her rendez-vous with Victor when she is hit by a car while she runs across the street.  She wakes up in hospital to find that she will be confined to a wheel chair for the rest of her life.  Not wanting Victor to pity her, Gwen doesn't contact him and moves away to live alone instead.  Six months later, she hears a knock at the door of her apartment.  Wheeling herself over to open the door, Gwen sees Victor standing there.

"Victor, Darling!" Gwen says. "You found me."

"I had to find you," Victor says.  "I wanted to give you this."

He holds out a sheet of paper.

"What is it?" Gwen asks.

"A bill for the damage you did to my car."

Yeah, those old movies are really something all right.  Tonight, I think I'll just listen to the radio.
