 Do People Still Read Books?

November 11 2007

I've been off the Internet for a few days because of computer problems, but I'm baaaaack.

Now, I have some questions for anyone reading this blog.  Frequently, I hear comments on television and see articles in newspapers saying that we all live in a post literate age now and that nobody reads any more.  Yet, whenever I walk into a bookstore, the place seems to be doing a brisk business.

Do you still read books?

Do you read mostly fiction or nonfiction?

Has our video age changed your reading habits? (e.g., Do you find your attention span is shorter?  Do you expect books to have more visual descriptions in them?)

I'd be very interested in learning your responses to the questions above.

hi gj!
love to read - there's a discount store behind my place where i can buy books for only a couple bucks - how good is that? i've got a stack of about 10 books beside my cumfy couch waiting to be dealt with.
i read historical fiction and historical chronicles mostly - going back in time is fun....
good question...
cheers!

I have probably read several thousand books but sadly my eyes don't allow much reading of books anymore. I have read both fiction and non fiction. I always thought the knowledge of the world was in books. I am so thankful for the internet because with my computer setup for large fonts I can still read some things. I still enjoy reading other peoples ideas although few believe as I do anymore. For those that have good eyes I encourage them to read everything they can get their hands on that interest them. The more you read the greater your depth of knowledge and thought.

I read both when time allows - You can not beat a book and, fiction, non fiction etc - anything really so long as it grabs my attention

Have to admit that the information age and the internet has dipped into my reading time. But I still go to college, applied Linguistics, so reading and language is tops on the list.

Thanks for the reply. Like you, I enjoy reading both fiction and nonfiction, but I write only fiction because I'm too lazy to do much research.

You're lucky to get your books so inexpensively. By the way, you chose a way cool blog name.

I can identify with you because I'm having some vision problems right now too, though I hope they're temporary.

Reading a variety of things, as you do, is usually the sign of a bright and open mind.

Sometimes, there can be much knowledge and wisdom in just a paragraph.

Linguistics must be a fascinating field. That's also Naom Chomsky's specialty, so you're in good company.

Thanks to all of you for your interesting replies.

I know it's kind of late, but I do read, as much as I can with kids! I read new books, classics, fiction, non-fiction, you name it! I am currently reading Memoirs of a Geisha, and have just finished To Kill A Mockingbird, I have a shelf full of books to read, I read to my kids every night! My dad read to me when I was little, he would read the newspaper outloud if he had nothing else!
