 At The Party
March 16 2008

One of the interesting things about being a writer is the reaction that I get from people when they find out what it is that I do.  A few evenings ago, my wife and I went to a house party where she knew some of the guests, but I'd never met anyone there before.  I'm not good at parties anyway, so I was standing alone, nursing a glass of club soda, when my hostess walked up to me.

"Margaret tells me you're a writer," she said. "What do you write?"

"Books."

"Well, that's a scary coincidence.  I read a book once.  Can't remember what it was called, but there was this picture of a horse on the cover."

"I think I read that book too," I said.

Just then, her husband came over.

"Harry," my hostess said, "this is George Condork."

"Condon," I said.

"George is a writer, Harry.  Why don't you talk to him while I see whether I can find anybody interesting?"

She walked away, leaving Harry and me looking at each other.

"I bet you write hot books," Harry said.

"I don't know what you mean."

"You know.  Stories about guys having wild sex with gorgeous blonds who have big..."

"Sorry, but I write mysteries."

"Sure.  Private eyes having wild sex with gorgeous blonds who have big..."

"And science fiction," I said hastily.

"Right.  Aliens having wild sex with gorgeous blonds who have big..."

I was curious about how far Harry would go with this.

"I also write children's books," I said, though it was a lie.

"Yeah.  Guys having wild sex with little...  Hey!  You write dirty books about little kids?  What kind of pervert are you?"

"Excuse me," I said. "I need another drink."

On my way to the bar, I noticed a glum looking man standing in one corner.

"Not having a good time?" I asked him.

"Naw. My wife dragged me to this shindig, but I don't fit in here.  Everybody's so hoity toity.  Me, I just work in a sewer."

"Wow!" I said. "You're so lucky to have such a great job."
