So, anyone who reads my blogs might say that I've got issues that stem from childhood...Yep. We all have them. But I also wanted to share one of my most cherished memories that most people (to my knowledge) have not experienced. Few people know about this experience of mine - how do you just walk up to someone and say "Excuse me, but I've seen angels."? But it's true. No - I am not nuts. Nope - wasn't on drugs.
I was about 10 years old. I was playing with my bestest friend, doing what 10 year old kids do....get into mischief. We climbed up onto an awning that covered a basement stairwell. Ya' know - the roof of a stairwell. It was winter, and I was wearing my favorite red hooded winter jacket. (I have a picture of me wearing it.) And since it had snowed a few days prior, we were on this slanted stairway covering and using it as a slide. I remember it well. I sat with my feet straight out in front of me, and pushed myself backwards up the incline, with my hands. And then I fell off. Backwards. I had pushed too far and now I was plummeting down backwards from a 12 foot incline onto a the top of the concrete steps. I remember the sound of my hooded head hitting the concrete. It sounded like a large, yet hollow wooded block. No pain. Just lights out.
My friend had the good sence to run for help, and her parents came to the rescue. They picked me up and put me in the car. Now, off to my house then to the hospital. (I guess they weren't thinking to call 911 and not move me - for i could have had a serious neck injury.) I remained unconscious for 3 days. Mild concussion. Lots of swelling - looked like I was carrying a grapefruit on my head. When I woke of from my days of rest, my mom was at my side. She smiled at me and I spewed out "I saw angels."
The remainder of the blog should go something like this:
Red Hooded Jacket - $75.00
7 Day Hospital Stay - $Arm, $Leg, and $First Born
The Look on My Mom's Face When I Blurted Out That I Saw Angels - Priceless!
She just brushed it off to "It's the head injury". Now, judge me you may. But, here's the kicker.....I never told you that my injury occurred in a Church yard. It's a beautiful church - large, oval, stained glass windows of Saints looking over the parking lot that we were playing in. Mind you, I fell 12 feet onto the conrete - head first. I like to believe that as I fell, angels fluttered their winds to ease my fall. Or, maybe it was God's had that became the barrier between my melon and the sidewalk.
I returned to the church yard, once I got the Doc's ok to resume my life. I remember walking toward the church and seeing the same Angel in the grass, by this large boulder that we always liked to play on. It was a quick glance, and when I did a double-take to see if I was really seeing what I thought I saw, it was gone.
I's funny....whenever I have told people about this experience, they are first in disbelief - then, they don't believe it.
I guess I was just lucky to have the experience - or maybe I wouldn't have believed it either.
