Today was a big day for us as a family. Today we got to introduce ourselves properly to our son, and express our love for him in a way he could understand.
The nurse came to see us, and then the doctor and he said that Stanley is doing incredibly well to say that he was so early. They need to keep monitering him, doing their tests and blah blah blah, but the upshot is...he's really quite fine, just small and fragile.
And then he asked quite possibly the stupidest question I think I have ever heard
"Would you like to hold him?"
I looked at Cheb and she looked at me and I saw her eyes light up and I smiled at her and nodded. I knew she was about to ask me if I wanted to hold him first (my eyes would have shown my eagerness to do so) so I got in there quick and said "I think he wants a cuddle from him mum."
So I stood back and watch as she lifted him up and held him close to her, nuzzling him and muttering to him. And he never cried, he just settled into her arms.
Okay, I'm gonna be seriously sloppy now, so if you dont like that sort of thing, read no more, or reach for your sick bag, but I think an occasion such as this warrents it.
In that moment I was just so, so happy for her. I mean this girl - this woman - has waited all her life for this moment. I know she's dreamed of it, and I've seen her when we've been out and about, looking at other mums with their babies and their children, on her face etched a smile, but a sad smile, and I could always read her mind "I want that"
So I watched her hold him, and saw the first smile I have seen on her that wasnt tinted with even the slightest hint of sadness. Its like there's nothing between her and total happiness now.
If I had even the slightest part in that happening, I'm so so pleased. If only I could make her see that she has done the same for me!
So then it was my turn and I held him like she showed me how, and it was wonderful and scary. I'm a big guy and I was worried I would hurt him, scare him even, I mean he fits in my hand! I put my face in close to him and kissed him and he wriggled a little and went to sleep in my arms. He sleeps alot but then I dont blame him.
I set him back down in his bed and we just sat watching him for a while.
The doctor tells us he will be in hospital for a couple of weeks yet then they will be able to think about him going home, just making sure the health visiter comes each day for the first couple of weeks. They told Cheb she could go home maybe in a week and she told them flat, not without her son. The doctor said they could 'dicuss that when the time came' but I hope he isnt thinking of trying to tell her what to do, because he will have Cheb, her mum and me on his back if he upsets her!
So Cheb fell asleep and I watched them both for a bit and now I'm in the internet cafe, checking her emails and such and blogging for you guys.
My mum is on her way and I'm gonna have to go outside and keep an eye out for her shortly. Before today she had only ever driven as far as Newcastle town centre (and once to Sunderland I think) so Nottingham is a heck of a distance to drive. I did suggest the train but she hates trains! Chances are she'll get lost, but I hope not because I dont drive so how am I gonna help her?? Sheesh...mothers really are something else arent they?? Haha x And me? Well...I'm bloody well surrounded by them now, arent I?
Tonight I shall sit between my mum and my mum in law on the sofa with a bacardi and coke and watch Eurovision - and although to some that might sound like a form of toture...to me it sounds like lots of fun.
The United Kingdom - nil points! Hehe x
Peace and love and big squidgy cuddles guys!!!! xxxxxx

Wow, your little guy is doing so amazingly well, and bet he'll do all the better now he's getting cuddle time :)
I am so so happy for both of you, but the way you described so wonderfully what that cuddle with her boy meant to Cheb today, has made me well up with happy tears.
I look forward to your next update

So delighted to hear everything is going so well. It is a magic time after the birth of your first, something you never forget. He's a lucky little guy having parents who love him so much and value the miracle of it all.

I felt this was your best post so far. It must have been such an incredible feeling to hold him in your arms and have him fit so perfectly! I was smiling as i read this post and it really touched my heart.
The three of you are in my thoughts.

ahhh, pure happiness, I am soaking it in from your post. For you,a little soaking in a 'cuba libre' rum and coke is a nice way to toast the new family bond.
