Quite some time ago, I read an article in Time magazine about a meeting between the leading Catholic and Jewish leaders. They spent some time discussing the similarities and differences in each other's faiths, from interpretation of religious texts to ritual practices. There was a quote in the article that I found particularly inspiring:
"isn't it wonderful when two parties can disagree, and keep talking,"
I loved that quote because to me it defined tolerance. You and I don't have to agree with each other to keep up a friendly dialogue. We don't have to avoid mentioning controversial differences for the sake of keeping peace. On the contrary, It is exactly these differences that can help us learn to appreciate our own views all the more.
Moreover, you do not have to give up your own conviction to be open minded. For example, I am a Christian, but that will never affect my treatment of those who are not. My religious text is very clear...I am supposed to love (not judge) my neighbor. That's any neighbor not just my religious brethren.
This concept can go beyond religion, to political views, cultural differences, etc. We don't need to whitewash culture to get along. It is our diversity that gives this world color and life. This is why I love to discuss and debate. People who know me sometimes think of me as very contrary. But personally, I look forward to debate as a way to sharpen myself. If i can defend my point of view, then i can be firm in my opinions. If I run out of arguments, then i need to either gather more information about or change my perspective. If we run from opposition two things happen...
1) we lose an opportunity to understand our neighbor
2) we never gain a deeper understanding of ourselves
I don't argue out of a need to be right, or alienate someone who disagrees. I argue out of a need to find the weaknesses in my own perspective, to be prompted to think more deeply on subjects that are the most dear to me. I debate to gain a deeper understanding of the opposing side. This to me is open mindedness: a hunger for diversity and a willingness to change. Don't run from dissonance. Embrace it and it will resolve itself.
