How to Make a Diaper Cake
How to make a diaper cake is a problem faced by many, when trying to come up with the best baby shower gift!

You probably want to bring a baby gift everyone goes ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ over, but even if you think you know how to make a diaper cake, assembling it requires some skills.

There are many reasons that make a diaper cake the best baby shower gift – it’s a gift that people will be talking about long after the baby shower is over and what is more needed by a new parent than diapers?

But first, do you know what a diaper cake is?

The Diaper Cakes are beautiful and unique, inedible "cakes" made of diapers and frosted with a variety of things a new baby needs (hooded towels, receiving blankets, bibs, bottles, toys, toiletries, etc.).
Not only does it make the hit of the party by being a creative and great centerpiece, it also answers many of the new mother’s immediate needs.

The diaper cakes come in many styles and sizes to suit anyone’s taste and budget.
However, in the mind of one attempting this for the first time, the question that lingers on is: how to make a diaper cake?

Basic baby shower diaper cakes are rather easy to make, and really do not require a rocket science degree to prepare it.
It might take a while to get it right, but once one understands the basics behind it, it is actually a cakewalk to prepare it.

When I made my first diaper cake it took me days and I had to through about 90 diapers that went bad, and I ended up buying a diaper cake on my way to the baby shower

When I was invited to the second baby shower, I was determined to get it right, and by myself, and I spent days looking for the right “recipe” explaining how to make a diaper cake.

I went through dozens of sites, viewed a few online videos, until I found a video tutorial that make it very easy to make a diaper cake.

Not only does it teaches the basic diaper cakes, it also makes it very easy to make the most attractive diaper cakes, the diaper cakes that sure make it to be the centerpiece of the baby shower.

If you are going for the basic diaper cake (that can be very beautiful although it uses the basic pattern) you can try to make it on your own, following these instructions:

How to make a diaper cake:

Go to a local baby supplies store and bring the following ingredients:
  • 60 - 90 diapers (The more diapers you'll buy, the bigger the diaper cake will be!).
  • 1/2 or 1 inch wide Ribbon, patterned to fit the baby shower theme (Pink for baby girls and blue for baby boys are the most popular colors).
  • Another 1/4 inch Ribbon to tie the rolled diapers with (it can be made easier if using rubber bands instead of the ribbon)
  • 8 large rubber bands
  • One 4-oz baby bottle
  • One 8-oz baby bottle
  • One large bottle of baby lotion
  • A cardboard to be used as the cake’s platter
  • A variety of baby items for decoration, such as Pacifiers, bottles, lotion, bibs, receiving blankets, miniature stuffed animals, baby towel etc.
After bringing all these ingredients you get to actually make the diaper cake:
  • Get the diapers and ribbons together and roll them individually with ribbons (or rubber bands)
  • Stack the diapers together on a platter using and bigger rubber bands
  • Create tiers, upon tiers, as per one's desire and the cake is ready.
  • When the basic is finished, you have to remember that what makes a diaper cake attractive is the way it is decorated.
When you come to make a diaper cake, remember that the decoration is what makes it the centerpiece of the baby shower, so use the baby items you bought to decorate your diaper cake and make it colorful and beautiful!

Even that this pattern is considered the basic pattern, you can achieve very beautiful diaper cake when using it, as you can see in the pictures below.

After I took the video tutorial explainingHow to Make a Diaper Cake”, I make only the more advanced patterns, when you can see the diaper cake’s flow, and the decoration tip they provide make the different for me.

So, either if you are about to make a diaper cake yourself, or you choose to make life easier and take the video tutorial, I wish you the best of luck when you come to make a diaper cake.

I’ll be happy if you sent me some pictures of the diaper cake you made, and any tips you came up with that can make it easier to make a diaper cake.

Another great blog post answering how to make a diaper cake is TheCookDuke’s post called How to Make a Diaper Cake

I agree that a diaper cake is the best baby shower's gift.
My friends and I made it our special gift, and whenever attending a baby shower everyone knows that we are bringing an amazing diaper cake with us :-)
We tried to understand how to make a diaper cake, as it doesn't look too complicated, but we never managed to pull it through and we buy one each time.
Did you make these cakes yourself?
If I can do that cakes after the video course, I think I'll try it.
Do you lear how to make all these cakes at the video?

Sorry for the late respond, wasn't online for a while...
I did learn all of this from the video course, I think it was a great deal as it saves both time and money, and more important - it's a great fun :-)
