 Fathers Day Tribute

In many families there is one parent who sticks out in a child's mind. For me, it was my father. Since Fathers day is coming up I thought I would write a loving "in memoriam" tribute to my father. Dad, this is for you.

Life is precious. That's what my father used to always tell me. Live each day as full and as heartfelt as possible as there may be no tomorrow.

Growing up in a depressed urban area wasn't always
easy for my dad as he struggled each day just to make enough money to put food on the table. Yet each night after dinner he would always have enough time to throw the ball around with me or play one of my favorite games.

Every Sunday after helping my mother with the breakfast dishes he would say, "son, lets get our fishing poles and go catch us some dinner". So, off we went without a care in the world.

One Sunday while fishing I noticed that he didn't seem to be as talkative as usual. I asked him, "Dad, are you feeling ok"? He just looked at me and smiled and said "yup,I'm just a little tired that's all".

We were only out for about a half hour when it happened. He cast his line into the water, dropped his pole and slowly slumped down on to the pier. I was terrified. "Dad, dad" I kept shouting, "are you alright"? By this time a crowd of people were gathered all around us. "Call an ambulance" someone shouted. "Is anyone here a Dr." someone else yelled out. Luckily, someone knew how to give CPR and started it right away. It seemed like an eternity but finally the ambulance arrived.

He never regained consciousness. I was ten years old when my father died. Even though I'm in my fifties now I still remember that day as vividly as if it was yesterday.

Every Fathers day I go out to that pier as I used to every Sunday, and I have a little chat with him. I tell him how much it meant to me to have a dad that cared enough about me to spend his precious time off doing things with me. I tell him how much I truly miss him and how much I still really love him.

I tell him all about his four wonderful grandchildren and how he is still very much alive through my stories about his loving personality and selfless nature.

Most important of all though, I tell him how he has made me a better man and a better father because of his motto of living each day to the fullest and as heartfelt as possible.

I try to live my life by that motto each day because life is short, and it's most certainly precious.

As always, thanks for reading.

As always, this Sunday I will take that walk along the pier.
I will gaze into the cold blue water and and have a little chat
with my Dad.

Sometimes life just deals us a crushing blow. It is OUR
job not to let it crush our spirit. I do think of him
every day as I remember those words he spoke to me as a child so
many years ago.

"Live life to the fullest and as heartfelt as possible".

JT I love my Dad, but it is my Mom that has control over that Hellion part of my life. She has a way of dealing with me that my wife can't even accomplish. I guess since you started this with one parent sticks out in a Childs mind more then the other I figured I would bring up my Mom. Right now we walk in the mornings and we talk. She is 73 now and I often wonder how many more years I will have her in my life. My heart does go out to you even though I can't relate to loosing a parent. So I will just say Happy Fathers Day to you JT hope it is a good one for you and your kids.

I am glad that you and your mom are so close.
I never was able to have that kind of relationship with my
mom after my father passed.

It is important to savor the time you have with your loved ones
as you say "time waits for no man".

Thank you for wishing me a Happy Fathers day. The same right
back at ya D.

Funnyman - I'm sure that your dad often visits that same pier and sits with you. I'm also sure that he is proud of the man that you have become. It's great that you remember him in this way.
Have a great Father's Day and a good visit with your dad.
Blessings.

Peace

Thank You for reading and sharing part of my fathers
memory with me. It is a time I look forward to each year.
Just to go and spend some time alone at that pier, and have a little
chat with my dad helps to strenthen me and to remind me who
I am.

He was a very warm and caring man. He was always thinking
of someone else and did what he could to make others happy.

I really miss him but going to the pier each year on Fathers
Day and having our little chat helps to bring the memory of his
caring spirit back.

Thanks for reading and sharing his memory with me.
Hugs.

Thank you Puck.
No Matter who we are in life or how old we become,
there are still those memories from our past we keep
coming back to.

THIS is one of mine.
