Sunsets are supposed to be beautiful…captivating and romantic,
But not the one that is slowly setting on what was once “you and I”.
The air hangs heavy with accusation and condemnation. I’m gasping.
Angry words crackle through the atmosphere, and sear through me.
Your eyes, once my inspiration with views of paradise, have darkened.
In blissful days, mirrors that reflected me in a warm and glorified light,
Now they’re only shards of broken glass glaring from behind your narrowed lids.
I remember your voice, a sound that made my heart leap and my body hum,
A mere memory of what it has become, as you revile me with your disdain.
A cold wind cuts through me as I grab my arms and huddle for comfort,
And I know that soon I’ll be alone in the dark and I’ll not have your hand.
I will have to find my own way, searching desperately for safety and shelter.
And the rain will fall as tears from my eyes, leaving me in cold puddles,
Mud clutching at my ankles and pulling me down toward the unforgiving earth.
Instinctively I know that, for the sake of survival and self-preservation,
In a hasty retreat, I must run as far and as fast as I can… away from you
