So what happened to the missing kids 20 years ago? It does not seem to explain it very clearly, or did I miss something or there is some hint somewhere in the book?

My biggest disappointment was that there were a lot of questions still unanswered by the end of the novel, leaving me slightly disappointed. This is the first book in a series, so I’m assuming that the questions will be answered in the next few books. Though, I’ve heard that Rob doesn’t even show up in the next novel, The Likeness, so I’m hoping French’s third novel will have some answers.

I will read "The Likeness" and come back and post here to let you know. I actually liked French's style and enjoyed the book quite well, only found the puzzle unanswered. I had not known or thought she had a plan to write a series when I read the book. Now you mentioned it, it started to make sense.

I wasn't aware that the other books followed on from the first. I have read In The Woods and liked it very much. I'll have to grab the next couple to find out the answers to my questions!
