"Even if everyone else is not doing good, I alone will. Even if everyone else is doing wrong, I alone will not." - The Buddha
Be one of a kind. We may see the whole world going in a direction that we know deep inside is not right for us, then we have to take a stand and follow our heart. It is easy to go with the direction of the world. I heard someone put it this way, when there is a flood, the corpses float away with the gushing water, but only those who are alive are able to withstand the current and also go against it. Like the Buddha said, I alone will do what is right. You have to, if you want to be an authentic person. If you always do what other do, you will never be our own person. When people give us praise we feel better, they slander us, we feel angry and sad. Totally lacking self-validation. In order to make changes, first of all, we need not have any conceit, either. Just have an inner knowing, but still be courteous in responses.
"One who is influenced by praise and blame is not God's servant.” Sri Guru Granth Sahib, page 51
Have control of your life in your own hands. Some people think as we get closer to God, we lose our individuality (e.g., Non-Self in Buddhism, or Body of Christ), but this idea is totally contrary. What individuality are we talking about losing if we can't even think for ourselves? We live up to the standard set by TV, movies, and our peers. To do something we have to ask others what they think of about it. There is nothing wrong with good counsel with friends and family, but constant dependency on others for your decisions is a problem, so, seek God's counsel.
"Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it." Matthew 7:13 - 14
Are you one of those rare people, who will find the gate that leads to life? Living the life of truth, disciple, integrity is not easy. There are countless opportunities that will be presented to us where we could possibly astray from the path, but stand strong. Let's not compare ourselves with people who seemingly have more than us. Inner peace will only come, when we are true to ourselves. E.g., if your inner voice prevents you from gambling, and you still do it and one day possibly you win a big jack pot. You still won't be able to find peace and happiness, because you have compromised your true nature, and your authenticity. You are not that person, you trying be someone else, this will only lead to more guilt, and identity crisis. Therefore, listen to your still, small voice. There is your real life. Your guiding principle, God's will, the Tao, anything you want to call it. Stand up for yourself, don't be ashamed of who you are. You are God’s masterpiece, God created you, God doesn’t make mistakes.
One day this life will come to an end, so live the life you want to. Because none of us want to be in our deathbed, and saying "what if my whole life was wrong." And I really believe it is never too late, we might as well be in our deathbed, we can still come to an understanding that, "I lived a life that may not have been truly authentic to my nature, but I have come in terms with that, and I am going to die in peace knowing I have come in terms with that"
For those of us who are not in our deathbed, we can make changes right now. It is never in a day or sometime in future. It all starts right now, this very second.

Good post. I always follow my own path, sometimes even in the face of al "evidence" to the contrary. Instinct has never let me down yet.

Thank you. Thats good. That's all we have. There is only one life, and we need live our own life. Otherwise it is sad to live it to meet standard set by others or by obligation.
