Its interesting to see a city like Hong Kong because it is so large, with so many people in such a small place that it has to be hard to organize the services and space. The way Hong Kong organizes the food is by having a lot of restaurants with a lot of small markets like 7/11. There are a few large grocery stores but not like you would see in San Francisco or Chicago. Also many of the markets are open 24 hours a day and many places deliver, much like New York City. I think this happens for a couple of reasons, the main one being that because there isn't a lot of space the apartments are small and many do not have a full kitchen, so cooking is a hassle. Also because the space to live is so small they most likely dont have a large eating area, and most people don't want to spend much time in their apartments. Speaking of eating area, its interesting to see how restaurants feed so many people in such a small space. One way is they seat random people together, we sat with some random people in the noodle restaurant and in other restaurants they made sure we left space for others to join us. However when we went to eat at Pizza Hut, which is an moderately upscale Italian restaurant here, it was quiet, we got our own booth and there was no rush to finish. The pizza hut meal was about twice as expensive as the other places, just to give you an idea of how it would compare. So like everything, if you have money you can pay for luxuries, which in Hong Kong include space, and quiet. |
