| Ever shower over a toilet?

One three-hour delayed (but great!) flight later, we have arrived. Cathay Pacific, thank you for showing us that customer service and great experiences with airlines haven't completely disappeared. It's all just moved outside of the United States. It was midnight when we finally got to our hostel but, like New York, Hong Kong never sleeps and the streets are as busy at midnight as they are at 9 am. Hong Kong, or at least what we've seen of it so far, is sticky and hot and bustling and overwhelming and we are very much playing the part of Americans who are completely out of their element. We are small and insignificant and though it is uncomfortable, it is also fantastic. Something else small, yet not at all insignifiant and completely not fantastic, is our bathroom/shower/sink combination. You don't know what a precious commodity a shower stall is until you're fighting with a toilet for standing room in the shower. To say the least, we will be upgrading to a hotel some time before leaving Hong Kong.
In between one to five hour naps, we've spent our first day here just trying to right ourselves. Being on vacation for the next five months, time is practically inconsequential and as such, we didn't bother to venture outside until nearly dusk to grab some food and check things out. Considering the amount of people in this city, there is no slow time of night or right time of day to walk these streets. There are people and they are everywhere and you better just get out of their way because they know where they are going and they are moving much faster than you are. Being the ultimate suburbanites that we so obviously are, we are attempting to put our American sensibilities behind us and embrace the busy-ness that is Hong Kong. Between trying not to get hit by taxis, fending off hawkers selling everything from massages to clothes to the borderline inappropriate and learning to say "hello," "thank you" and "we don't speak Chinese", you can be certain we'll hit our stride in a couple of days or so.
Tomorrow will be our first full day outside so pictures, etc. will be coming in the next day or so. Meanwhile, we'll be trying to make do with our bathroom. Sigh.
