 CNN's Latino in America
Latino in America is a documentary presented by CNN about the complications and struggles of being Latino. CNN took us through the life of a Dominican family that lived in New York then relocated to the south in search of a better life. UF sponsored the view of this show and opened the floor for questions and comments to relay how people felt being Latino here and now.

This CNN special really touched people because they noticed the importance of being Latino and how their culture is desecrating through customs developed in America. Some of the people felt that their language was and is the most important feature of understanding their culture and roots. As any other race in America, there is the factor of racism and some form of discrimination, based on factors beyond one's control. CNN attempted to bring these ideas to the surface. Children who are immigrants, who committed no crime, are treated like prisoners or delinquents. The real question is; Is this fair...? Depend on your idea of America and the way it’s run, your answer may defer. Overall, CNN wants to make people more aware of the growing population of Latinos in American and how the Latino population, as any other race plays a crucial role to the suitability of the country.

In between the showings, we asked people what they thought as well. Most people had very strong feeling about some aspect of being Latino in America or another. Most said, it’s no different they other races. But others, who were not born of America soil, had a completely different point of view. They felt as if they were aliens here. They are in a world that completely different. Some said they learn English through school and interactions with other people. Also these Latinos felt that because of their language barrier, some people did not like to deal with them because of the difficulties understanding what is being said or some outrageous stereotype.

After asking people questions, getting to know them and their troubles we invited them to become a part of the thoughts.com family and create a forum or blog to talk with others Latinos and experience how they overcame the transitions. Most of the people were really responsive to the idea of connecting with others through a forum or blog. The Flyer came in handy here for sure. lol Overall, this was a great event to assimilate the ideas and philosophies of Thoughts.com. Many people forget that no matter where you are from, human rights are always the most important aspect of any country especially in America, the land of the free. As I explained to the students thoughts.com fully back the idea of one world, one human, one LOVE.

You write, "their culture is desecrating through customs developed in America". Please explain how America is desecrating their culture, if that indeed is your point.

Also, how are their "children treated as prisoners and delinquents"? I don't understand that one either.

If you're going to toss these statements out to the community, please be willing to clarify them. Once understood, maybe we can discuss them.

I happen to adore the Latino people. If, however, they attempt to override the American culture, and insist that it adapt to them, then we will have a problem.

First of all, in the cnn special, they interviewed a Latino family that originated from the Dominican Republic. In this point, "their culture is desecrating through customs developed in America" refers to the family's lost of culture and heritage as they assimilate into the american culture and way of life.

In this point,"children treated as prisoners and delinquents", refers to CNN's investigation of the refuge camps that immigrant are place in and treated as common criminal. When the only crime they committed was their search for the american dream, illegally.

In this blog posting, I was not attacking anyone. I was merely giving a reflection of what I saw in the CNN special and how I felt about it. I love everyone the same. Just some of the thing Latino Americans and other minority group face stabs me a little deeper. Simply because I too am a form of a minority and is subjected to stereotyping and negative statistical information. Which overall bears down on the emotional and psychological development of a person face with this traumatizing information. An example is being told by your environment that you will be nothing but a jail bird... kind of harsh, but it totally exists. Thanks again for commenting on my post I really appreciate the conversation.

(Environment is everyone and everything around you.)

fighter, I didn't see your post as an attack post. Neither is mine, though I believe we disagree greatly on this subject.

I'm not a lover of CNN. They distort the facts to better perpetuate their liberal agenda. It's interesting that the children in question are those of immigrants who sneak into America illegally. It's also interesting that Americans, not the parents, are always blamed when the illegals and their children are caught and detained.

As for the parents whose culture is "desecrated" upon coming to America, I have a few questions. If their homeland and culture are embraced and cherished above the American culture, why not stay home and embrace it fully? If my culture is so "destructive", don't come to live in my country. If you don't wish to become a full-fledged, legal citizen of my country, don't sneak your family through my back door and then cry foul when you're caught. This is MY country, not that of an illegal.

As for your jailbird comment, it is BS. Nobody in America will turn anyone into a jailbird if they obey our laws and come here legally. That's a fact.

Fighter, if you constantly listen to CNN and other liberal programs you are cheating yourself. You seem like a nice educated person (love that hat!), but you are far too liberal for your own good. Understand that there are always two sides to any news story - the liberal side and the conservative side. CNN told you their side. The side they wanted you to hear. I just gave you a piece of the other side.

I hope we can still remain civil to each other. I'd really like that. You seem pretty cool. Peace out, brother.
