Suddenly a man with leprosy came and knelt in front of Jesus. He said, "Lord, you have the power to make me well, if only you wanted to." Jesus put his hand on the man and said, "I want to! Now you are well." At once the man's leprosy disappeared.
Matthew 8:2-3
_leapers at Jesus times were disgusted and were isolated because of their disease that is highly contagious. they were discriminated. they were the outcast of the society and being good to them is one of the big no's that day. they have a place, where they were thrown, they can call their own. they do not have a normal life. they thirst the embraces of comfort, a shoulder taps of acceptance and hand-shakes of encouragement. all of which involves care, concern, love and touch.
_touch can spell comfort, acceptance, encouragement, sympathy. love and many others louder than words can do; those that were hold back by many. yes, a simple shoulder tap could say and make the person feels "i am here. i am with you." more meaningfully than you could say it with words. an embrace is more comforting than a phone call that would say "it will be ok. hush now. we are here for you."
_Jesus did not hesitate reaching out to touch a leaper when he ask Jesus to heal him. in fact, Jesus could have spoke the words to heal him from afar and that would be enough. but Jesus chose to come near, extend His hands and touch the person despite his disease and healed him. Jesus gave more than healing to this leaper. imagine the span he had the disease longing for a connection. no one would touch him, none would like to talk or even look his way. by way of touching Jesus' act shouted that he can be touch now, he is healed. if Jesus did not touch him, others would very much doubt if he has been really healed.
_do not hold back. your touch can say much.
