| When you learn your friends are Prejudice |
They have been friends of mine for more than a year and came to my rescue when I needed a place to a stay; after my husband abandoned me and I needed a place to stay. What did I know about them before then?
I knew they were both animal lovers as they had dogs and cats in the house, and in fact the animals outnumbered the people more than 5 to 1.
I knew that both were Wiccan. Which was a point that was an irritation to my husband at that point because he was rude to them. Although I am not sure he was rude to them about that or because he knew I might sleep with her, since she was Bisexual too. Later that night I had felt safe enough to sleep with both of them. They knew that my marriage was not a marriage except on PAPER.
They knew that make-up could cover bruises and clothes could cover the same thing as well as broken skin or worse. Pain was covered by my personality.
They befriended me even though we did not always have sex.
When they moved away and I was still with the husband. Till he moved out and left us in the apartment alone without food. Till he came back for his belongings. I worked hard looking for a place I could go too.
There are many things people hide amongst themselves... being racist... prejudice is one thing, I think is the one thing I honestly believe is something that perhaps comes with, maybe how you are raised or maybe just that you are educated in a better way.
For them... one of them tells "off-color" jokes and thinks nothing of it. Both use derogatory terms that are degrading, and that I would never use. That I find, absolutely wrong. I've asked him not to use the word, "colored." To find another word, a better one. Something less distasteful. It's 2009 and I don't understand what I hear around my dinner table like it's just regular table banter. Tonight as one talked to the other over his job... and his boss, she told him, "it's just like a jew to act like that, they are just out for themselves, out to get money, to make money. They care only about themselves and after they make all the money they can then they will fire every one else and blame everyone else for the mistakes they made."
I was shocked, I looked at her, my mouth hanging down. Flies the size of a 747 could have flown in. I just asked her if she was serious. She asked me, "about what?" That comment about you made about what type of people you think jewish people are just about. Do you really think this way? I just don't understand. How can you think his religion has anything has to do with his business practices? Thats just wrong. It's like all those people who think we are satantists. And you are just propagating it. Both of you are just propagating what we are trying to fight, which is that prejudice and racism is wrong regardless of what race, religion, sex you are; it is ALL wrong.
So I ask all of you reading this to remember that everytime that you make a joke at someone else's expense, you do so by showing everyone your own ignorance. Because it's not intelligence that you are showing when you laugh at others' whether they are overweight, disabled, of a different race, a different Faith or any other thing. Be smart, intelligent... Be Nice.
