| Karma....For Real? |
Have you ever sat and around and asked yourself, “Why do these things happen to me”? I’m sure we all have at some point. The answer we arrive at can either be one of a pitiful sort, such as, “just my luck”, or was it simply some decision that we made along the way? The interesting part of this question for me is why so many people blame others for what happens to them. Yes, I know, there are times when someone else is responsible for some action against you. But if you delve a little deeper into your own actions, how much “steering ability” over our own destiny do we really have?
This brings me to one of my favorite quips we all here from time to time. “Ain’t karma a bitch?” The dictionary definition I chose to adhere is: action, seen as bringing upon oneself inevitable results, good or bad, either in this life or in a reincarnation. This definition stems from Buddhism, which is an interesting topic to research in and of itself. I refer you to Richard Gere on this one I believe….haha.
So could karma be a real aura that guides the lives of us little humans? For those of us that are somewhat passive aggressive AND do make an honest attempt to always “do the right thing”; I sure hope so!!
Now again, these are my opinions, so save all the hate mail if I offend some of you, or a hero you may have that I mention. It is simply an opinion. If I have not mentioned it at some point already, I am a police officer, and have been for over 16 years. Me, as well as countless other officers have all felt the frustration of the bad guy “getting away”, or when they “get off” from a charge that we know damn good and well they are guilty of. I could go on and on with our frustrations with the Justice System, but we leave that for another day. So mainly, it can be a small soothing thought that “Karma” will catch up with the scourge of our society that get away from time to time.
Now, when I talk about Karma, I don’t make any assumption that when something happens to a person, they necessarily deserved it. I prefer to say, “What happens, happens”.
Let’s take for instance Michael Jackson. I know I am tired of hearing about it, and I thought it was going to slow down….until low and behold, now his death is a homicide. So did he get what he had coming to him, after being found not guilty of the child abuse allegations? I know some hope so. I know, I know, he was found “not guilty”. I prefer to look at things this way. First, in a court of law, I have found that just because a jury says you’re “Not guilty”, doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t think you did it. It simply means the prosecutor didn’t prove his case beyond a reasonable doubt. In my experience, where there is smoke, there is a fire. It’s safe to say my record of never sitting on a jury will continue.
What about Steve McNair, the former NFL quarterback? I remember watching him play my alma mater, Sam Houston State, when he played for Alcorn State. He was an incredible quarterback. Here he was, living the high life, owning a business, a huge figure in Nashville. But he was seemingly cheating on his wife with this younger woman. Does this give her a right to kill him? Of course not….but again, choices people make…..
You can go a long way with this discussion when it comes to professional athletes. I am a huge sports fan. It always amuses me when I see these athletes wanting special treatment and sympathy from “regular Americans” when they run afoul of the law. Plaxico Burress, Pac Man Jones, Michael Vick, Donte Stallworth…the list goes on and on. I say think about how you were acting when you were on top of the world; making millions of dollars while looking down on us “regular folk”.
I tell my son, among other things, “Don’t put yourself in a position to get in trouble”. These things come to us as we get older, but the faster we learn, the better.
Think about your personal life. I have. There have been a couple of people in my life do some really bad things to me (in my opinion). I like to think that I took “the high road”, or at least the highest road available. People would counsel me, “I wouldn’t put up with that”, or, “I would get revenge”. Instead I choose to sit back and believe that “they will get what they have coming to them” someday; whatever that might be. Ah, yes, my passive aggressive side crops up.
And if you should happen to hear about misfortune a person has that has done you wrong, do you smile a little? Or do you think….”That’s what you get?” Perhaps that is human nature. I don’t know.
I firmly believe that people “know” when they have done you wrong, and even if they can’t tell you that, or make it up to you, they know. Perhaps respect is gained by how the person that is “wronged” reacts to any given situation. There is a small amount of satisfaction there.
Please do not mistake this as a religious essay, because it’s not. Just observation and thought.
In the end, I relate this to, what I think is one of the best things ever written or conceived; The Golden Rule. I am FAR, FAR from perfect, but I have tried to live by the rule. I am not sure when it is confirmed that you have lived your life the right way, but as of now, I have a wonderful son, great family, a good job, my health, some loyal friends, and hopefully the respect of several. I know I respect so many people immensely.
I have never, ever wished anything bad upon somebody, period. But when it happens, and then you think, hmmm……perhaps it’s karma…..Good Day all.
