So my friend and I had decided a few days back that we're going to go backpacking through Europe in about 5-7 years from now. We have books and ideas of where all we want to visit, and plans on saving the cash. Looking at the statistics, the cost isn't too bad. Relativley cheap to tell the truth. Which gets me thinking...why is everything so expensive here? I mean, I live in a moderatly sized city in Iowa...so prices arn't skyrocketing here, but they are high. I don't understand why America, regarding the American dream, is not really a dream anyone should look for. The more I hear about European countries and all the bonuses they seem to get, like free health care, free ride into college, 4 weeks paid vacation when you START working, 6 months paid maternity leave plus another 6 months if you decide you need more time. Plus people in other countries are in better health than Americans when it comes to obesity, and heart problems. Maybe after visiting Europe I will want to make a change and live somewhere there and change the American Dream into a European Dream. |

Most of the countries that have the things you are talking about here are countries that have the highest taxation in the world.
Some countries like Denmark tax their people 75 percent of their earnings. So yes, all that free stuff is great, but everyone pays for it with taxes. So someone that doesn't get sick, someone who doesn't have children going to college, someone that isn't going to have children, pay for the free health care of those that are sick, pay for college of those that are going, and pay for the maternitiy leave of those having children.
Beyond this huge argument, you have to keep in mind that the United States has the best doctors in the world, the best colleges in the world, and some of the highest rates of child survival in the world.
Expensive and not socialist perhaps..... Worth it? Definitely.
