| Chavares Block 1988-2008 |
The Dermott Public School District remembers Chavares Block.
It is with heavy hearts that we, the administration, faculty, staff, and entire student body mourn the senseless and untimely death of one of our promising young graduates, Chavares Block. We are ever cognizant of the fact that life is fragile, but are never quite prepared for such a tragedy. “Block”, as he was affectionately called, exemplified what it means to be a model student. He was very respectful, studious and conscientious. There was not one disciplinary report filed on him. It was always “Academics First-Athletics-Second.”
He served as President of the graduating Class of 2007. He also played football and ran track, of which he lettered all three years. He was a member of the BETA Club and graduated with Advanced Honors. Although he had a busy schedule, he managed to become a completer in the area of Hospitality and Tourism. This alone tells you the kind of personality he possessed.
Chavares had set his goal on becoming an engineer. After a college tour to UCA, it was settled in his heart and mind that he would reach this goal, and UCA was the school that would assist him. His quiet, gentle smile seemed to radiate an inner spirit of peace and self-assurance. His short life still serves as an example to other youth, both at Dermott High and the world. He has reminded us to “Live well, laugh often and love much.” We send our condolences to the family of Chavares Block and pledge to keep his memory alive, and his smile beaming in our hearts and mind.
