What comes out as unappealing to cardinals in this case are hanging bird feeders because they will not find it easy to perch on it. In this case, you may want to consider specialty feeders including humming bird feeders and suet bird feeders for different kinds of birds.
One of the major advantages of having hanging bird feeders is that they are by far the easier feeder to setup. Squirrels might be attracted by the hanging feeders though if you place them on tree branches and so this is something that needs some consideration. What you need to do is hang these bird feeders about 6 feet from any tree branch so as not to make it easy for any squirrels or chipmunks to have access to the feeders. In the case of hanging bird feeders, they utilize an open design. The wide base such as seen in Figure 1 is typically favored by most birds as their movement is not limited or restricted. They can freely sort through the seeds and nut mixes to fill up their little stomachs. You might also want to add bird baths and bird drinking stations when you set up your bird feeders. You are not limited to only one placement when what you have in your backyard are hanging bird feeders as they can be moved from area to area. If there are strong winds in one area, you can change the placement of the feeders or if there is too much sun hitting them in another, you have the option to re-position them again. Here is where it is important that you pay attention to the feeders especially when potential competitors are present and this is where you need to consider the best areas where the feeders should be placed.
Your location is a key element when it comes to determining the species of birds that will be swooping down to your feeders. Here is where crushed peanuts can lead you to robin sightings while nyjer seeds will assure visits from finches. Pay attention to the kinds of birds that will be visiting the feeder so that you will know what kind of feed you should get.
In the case of filling your feeder, you should do it early in the morning and late in the evening. Consider this and the birds will be thankful. During winter, your feeders play a very important role in keeping birds nourished and well-fed. The birds and the people who have hanging bird feeders in their home will both gain something out of these. It is truly amazing to hear the birds as they chirp. Think of it as their only way to say thank you for your everyday feast for them.
