I read a few articles today about the presidential races. Truthfully, each piece was nothing more than a bashing of the other side's candidate(s). Of equal truth is that neither article shed any real light on any candidate's ability to do anything. Each article was more in the vein of "how can you vote for so and so if he lied about/misled/mistated/is too old/too black/not black enough/too bitchy/wears too many pantsuits, etc.? To be honest, although I believe every election is important, I am sick of hearing all this stuff. Politics has become, in my humble opinion, nothing more than a team sport. We are supposed to vote for our team no matter how many stupid things they do or how many mistakes they make. Clearly, we do not demand the best of our representatives so we do not get it. If a child of our's made a mistake, we wouldn't (or shouldn't) make up a back-story to justify the mistake. Rather, being good parents, we should say something like, "Little Person, what you did was wrong. Here's what I think we should do to fix it." But we don't care. Just as we are compelled to pick apart someone like Brtiney Spears, one side of the aisle cannot wait to pick apart the carcass of someone from the other side of the aisle. There is no constructive dialog; only statements designed to advance the cause of the party, not the people of the US. Not very advanced behavior, is it? I suppose I shouldn't expect very much from our politicians. After all, since our country is only 230+ years old, making us "babies" in relation to other countries, why would we expect mature responses? In any case, here are some suggestions:
1 - stop behaving as if we have 2 countries - one red and one blue.
2 - this is an exceptional country. Let's demand that we have exceptional candidates.
3 - stop looking for perfection in each candidate. Aside from my wife and kids, there are no perfect people. (Ok, my wife is not perfect; I added her just in case she reads this.) People are imperfect. We make mistakes. We change our minds. Sometimes we do stupid things. Accept that. Haven't you ever heard the expression "You live, you learn"? But let's do learn and make amends. It builds character, and countries.
4 - vote out of office politicians who do not serve us well, even if they are members of your party
5 - institute term limits. Career politicians scare me. Serving the public is a calling, not a career on the public payrolls. Put in your time doing public service and then find another way to help people.
Ok. There, I've said it. Now i can get to a team sport I like - baseball. Go Yankees!!! Woo-hoo! |

DB,
I agree but neither side wants to work with the other and if someone does try to work something out with someone else the other side tries to get a political avantage to their party. It's an ideological battle between two political philosophies and it appears the socialists are winning because they believe more in their system than the capitalist.

J,
You are SO right. Maybe a truly viable third party is what is needed. In the meantime, I'll keep dreaming.....
