Someone is speaking to you, will you listen?
Someone is speaking to you, will you listen?

Our ability to hear what someone else is saying to us depends on weather or not we have trained ourselves with the selectivity of listening while the other person is speaking or weather we are just one of those people that has to always have something to say no matter what the other person is saying. God has given us ears to hear and eyes to see. Does that mean we use these gifts for the good they were given. Absolutely not, because most of the time we hear what we want to hear and then tune out what the other person is saying to us. Our eyes see the trees, but they cannot see the forest because we limit our imagination to only what’s in front of us, blocking our creative vision that is far reaching.

Now listen if you will to what the book of Proverbs tells us, it says, “But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, and will be secure, without fear of evil.” Sometimes we need to be secure in our own surroundings and people are telling us about things that could help us grow and be safe, but do we take the time to listen to what they are telling us, or do we just block out what they are saying and here only what we want to hear once again.

A good listener will adapt to his surroundings and will eagerly wait to here what the other person is saying before speaking. This allows the listener to gather his or her thoughts in a manner that will reflect well on what the person that is speaking has to say. When we learn to become good listeners we can here the voice of God speaking through everything and in everything that our ears may hear and our eyes may see.

When you learn to tune your listening skills into the Universal sounds of God, you will tune into the good of all things such as love, hope and courage and tune out gossip, fear and resentment. You will have within you the ability to listen to the beauty of your surroundings as you relax to the music of the masters; listening to the symphony of nature—hum of the wind in the treetops, bird songs, thundering surf.

Develop your listening skills to be patience. Do not hurry the other person. Show them the courtesy of listening to what they have to say, no matter how much you may disagree. You may learn something. When you become a good listener, you will grow in God’s grace, reflecting the beauty of His love that resides within you. As you learn to listen, you are allowing God to teach you, and the one thing He wants most from you is for you to be still, and allow Him to have His way with you.

Give God your heart by learning to listen with your heart. Practice empathy when you listen; put yourself in the other person’s place and try to hear his problems in your heart. When you do this you will be amazed at the growth you will experience as a good listener. Because as you grow, you will begin to experience the creativity, that lives within you. You see God has given others ideas to share with you. Good ideas are always all around you waiting for you to discover them from your ability to listen for them.

You are the master of your universe, the captain of your ship, and you will always reap what you sow. Sow sparely and you shall also reap sparely. Therefore if you want to develop the skills of becoming a good listener, you must practice, practice, and practice. The more you practice the better your listening skills will become, the more focus you will be and the greater the love for your fellow man to speak to your heart will be greatly enhanced.

Lovely post, Davis. It is important to listen quietly to our hearts and to God. It is only then that we can hear the Holy Spirit speak to us. Thank you for the reminder to slow down.

God bless.

Ellie, so true. Far to often we spend too much time talking and not allowing God to come in and heal our wounded spirits. Thanks as always for the visit.

Hollis, learning to listen is a skill worth fine tuning. Be patient and allow what you are listening for give you understanding of the truth in such a way that you might be able to help the other person see what God is trying to reveal to them. But most important, listen for the voice of God speaking to you.

Much love,

Davis
