 I'm Desperate, Not Dumb

Nothing like going back to work on Monday (for those who enjoy a proper weekend).  It's an opportune time to suggest a better line of work to a disgruntled employee, even in these trying times of new poverty and pessimism.

Along the lines of my recently posted "Winning the Lottery," this email came to me because of an updated resume posted on CareerBuilder.  It followed on the heels of two insurance agencies claiming I would be an excellent candidate to be an independent agent.  That's nice.  However, back when I did have assets, I belonged to the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce, and one person I'd gotten to know there was someone who'd left his career in IT management at Cadence to start his own State Farm agency.  I knew what he went through to become successful (which he did).  In addition to his determination and applied intelligence, it took something which is oxygen in business, and which I am experiencing a vacuum of -- it took working capital.

So I know, a priori, setting up an insurance agency is not an option.

Nor is this invitation.  It bears special commendation, because like the dead relative scheme from lawyers in Togo, this scam is particularly ingenious, and hence warrants an honorable mention.  While I may be too broke to start a business, I can at least sponsor a sort of Internet beauty contest of financial scams scheming to get at one's banking information.

Of course, in my case, that would be a lot of effort for nothing.

Here's the latest missive of misdirection.

Lyrics to Money (That's What I Want) :
(Radford/Cordy)

The best things in life are free
But you can keep them for the birds and bees
Now give me money
That's what I want
That's what I want, yeah
That's what I want

You're lovin' gives me a thrill
But you're lovin' don't pay my bills
Now give me money
That's what I want
That's what I want, yeah
That's what I want

Money don't get everything it's true
What it don't get, I can't use
Now give me money
That's what I want
That's what I want, yeah
That's what I want, wah

Money don't get everything it's true
What it don't get, I can't use
Now give me money
That's what I want
That's what I want, yeah
That's what I want

Well now give me money
A lot of money
Wow, yeah, I wanna be free
Oh I want money
That's what I want
That's what I want, well
Now give me money
A lot of money
Wow, yeah, you need money
Now, give me money
That's what I want, yeah
That's what I want

It sounds too good to be true.

Right, and after even a modicum of life experience, one knows if anything sounds too good to be true, it's simply because it's false.

Despite my penchant for links, I deleted the one on this letter. I suspect it was quite hazardous...

What is it with scammers and their aversion to the word 'the'. That, and their poor spelling, makes them really easy to spot.
Posted by  Perigo_Minas  on 2009-09-14 09:16:05

In many languages, such as Chinese, there are no articles such as "the." Hence, their absence, along with awkward grammar and misspellings, betray a foreign origin. Long before I joined thoughts, I'd received a similar letter, which claimed to originate in London, but was so far short of British standards for business correspondence I actually wrote back and pointed out just where they had demonstrated their tacit admission of deceit.

...I wonder if I happened to have kept that correspondence anyplace. Maybe AOL still has it archived. ;)

And, when it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. There must be a catch somewhere. Be careful even considering it. But, I know that you will.

Hugs, blessing, enjoyed our recent chat ------------------------------ Shea

I did indeed. See my comment above in response to Steve Hayes'.

Hugs and blessings to you too! Has your phone charged up yet? Our next chat should be my calling you (the perks of an unlimited plan).

My phone is charging, as we speak, and I would welcome your call, anytime. However, you are well worth the price of a call, and then some.

Hugs, my heart ----------------------------------------------- Shea

is "infrequent receipt of payment" supposed to be a selling point here?
I think these scammers would be more successful in their scheming if they hired an English speaking proof reader. I hope they never catch on!

lmtlsao@proofreaders needed by scammers ~ oh the blood money!!

WAIT! THAT'S IT!!

I can proofread these confidence schemers' correspondence. It could be a job! At last, my calling in life! And what better way to prepare for a career in law than to sell my soul so cheap. ;)

if they spent as much time on real work as they do working up a scam.. they'd be wealthy.. good version but this old fart goes for the original Clyde McPhatter version.. saw him on an Allen Freed package tour back in the day..

I'm amazed they didn't ask you to deposit money into a bank account so they could process your application. Hahahaha....
