Fasting for Darfur: For Peace and Justice in Sudan

now celebrating its 5,000,000th upload.

As if fasting for the month of Ramadan wasn't enough, today I am going to be on a water-only fast in solidarity with the efforts of the Darfur Fast for Life effort.  Today is the International Day of Fasting for Peace and Justice in Sudan.

Of course, I elect to define "water-only" as being inclusive of coffee and tea where it is unadulterated with sugar or milk.  Which, as anyone who knows my drinking habits knows, is the only way I take it, unless I'm in an odd mood, or wish to make a subtle insult of the coffee's lack of quality by masking it as best I can.

But allowing for this, "yeah, he really should be a lawyer," exemption will encourage me to fast beyond today in solidarity.  In fact, this may be just the excuse I should be looking for to commit to a weekly fast, a habit I once had back in the early 80s "just because."

This time around, it would have the added benefit of helping to reduce my weight and waistline.  Oh, to have my early 80s build...

I should apologize for this self-indulgeant introduction.  It is a blog, which can be very stream-of-consciousness and diaristic, but I still do not mean to trivialize or distract from the efforts of this organization to heighten awareness of the plight of those in Darfur.  Nor should my selection of a morbid tune by Kurt Cobain in lieu of "We Are the World" detract, it just reflects my predilection for grunge rock.

For more information on this effort, please visit the website "Darfur Fast For Life" and follow their efforts on twitter, at http://twitter.com/DarfurFast.  I'd write more, but it's time for prayer, and I have a little extra to pray about this morning it seems...

Lyrics to Help Me, I'm Hungry :

Hold me, there's too much tension
Grade me, I'm f*cking hungry
Help me, I'm f*cking cornered
Grade me, you might be right

Lightning f*cking around in my head
Fierce, dangerous, pathetic, f*cked up
People freaking every day
White lights inside
What do you want

Cold n*ked man, picked off his scabs and
Fed them to the pigeons
Help him, he's f*cking cornered
Grade him it might be fun

Lightning f*cking around in my head, etc...

Hold me, something's happening
Help me, somebody help me
Hold me, I'm f*cking hungry
Help me, I'm right here, who are you?

N*ked man (you say you saw)
Fed them, to the pigeons
Help him, he's f*cking cornered
Grade him, it might be fun

Lightning f*cking around in my head, etc...

Help me, I'm f*cking hungry
Help me, I'm f*cking up
Hold me, some f*cking help

It's too late here to start fasting, but I'll definitely do it tomorrow! Green tea usually keeps me going quite well.

Hey, try this for a double whammy. After fajr at masjid al-Noor, here in Santa Clara, they pointed out a "Six days" fast for this month, which apparently yields the imputed weight of having fasted all year. Only in a legalistic theology...

Green tea is what I guzzle besides black coffee. ;)

It just reminds me why I find religion absurd. I'll let you know how the fast is going tomorrow, perhaps I'll continue for 2-3 days, clean out the old system a bit, I haven't done that in a while.

Fasting against hunger, always reminds me of fighting for peace. I appreciate the sentiment, but cannot but see it as less than effective.

Intrinsically, fasting itself is a very personal action which has no external consequence: it's inherent goals may be spiritual, and/or physically cleansing. However, the advertisement and publicity of one's fast may actually be effective. I make no mention of other fasts I undertake, for they have no externalities, so to speak, but in this particular instance, my fast occured on a specific date, the 21st, and was tallied at the website cited. While I am not anyone of note, I was among those counted in its efforts that day to raise a modicum of awareness and contribute to the embarassment of the regime in Khartoum. Other things I do are probably more effective, but fasting as a form of protest against needless hunger, properly publicized, can be effective.

Of course, I'm not entirely pacifistic. Among my censored inclinations would be a desire to turn an AK-47 and machete back upon the Janjaweed who wage their state sponsored genocide in Darfur. While perhaps effective, and certainly satisfying on some level, that would hardly have the moral tenor of fasting.

Fighting for peace, as in waging a limited amount of violence in prevention of an unbridled conflagration of violence, can in fact make sense. Consider the classic thought-experiment of assassinating Hitler before the Holocaust and Blitzkriegen.

LOL. Well, so do I (along with all the starving folks in Darfur and elsewhere, like San Francisco's Tenderloin). But every now and then, not eating on purpose can serve as a moral statement and highlighter of reflection. It can also help you diet and generally give your gluttonous corpse-to-be a rest. ;)

Not today, though. I've got breakfast on my mind...
