 Jena 6
I actually just heard about all these shanagins today...I'm a little late on the news, obviously. and I just wanted to put in my words about this whole shebang.

Firstly, what the three white students did was HORRIBLE. I do not condone their acts at all. It makes me sick to think that people can be so blatantly cruel to others. They deserve to be hung on those nooses.

HOWEVER...

Six people (black white green blue whatever) attacked one person. They beat him up. They really beat him up. What their intent was, whether to kill him, just scare him, show everyone that it is not right what they did, to show revenge, it doens't matter. They did something illegal. And they should be prossecuted. It's silly because in a way, those dumb boys who hung the nooses won. Now  6 black boys are in jail and i bet the three white kids are laughing. If you want to start a freaking rally about something, start it on something reasonable, like the blantant act of racism of the 3 boys. Take a stand against their stupidity and ignorance. Not for 6 boys who ILLEGALLY battered someone.

I hope this doesn't come off the wrong way. I'm not very good with words. But it frustrates me. There are certain things to take a stand on. Racsism is obviously still very much alive around here. It is awful and it is corrupting our nation. But defending six boys who beat the crap out of some kid, despite the reasons, is not good either! These boys aren't martyrs. They are just angry kids who took the wrong approach. That's just my opinion. I guess I'm more of a peaceful kind of person. Rally to end racism. Don't support violence.

I hope i don't offend anyone! Just my thoughts, however scrambled they are!

Lets not forget that this boy that they beat his head into a wal several times was NOT one of the boys that hung the noose. The boys that did it do deserve more than a 2 day suspention try at least a wk no expeltion isnt a good choice either we want our youth educated. But what these thugs, yah I said it, thugs did was horrific. Doesn't our youth learn from other violence, like columbine or VT. hate begets hate. I dont get why I cant turn on CNN or FOX news with out hearing about Jena 6 or OJ. We have so much more to worry about right now. People worry about being so PC they they have turned into hypocripts. So if I offend Im sorry but I guess that is why we have freedom of speach. ALl the energy rotesting could be spent doing things for the homeless or education or other victims in there comunity. Just a thought

thank you for your comment. What makes me upset however, is the slogan "free the jena six!" Why free people who commited a crime? Instead, maybe the ralliers should focus on, as you said, the punishment of the boys who hung the nooses. I believe they received 3 days suspension even though the principal reccomnded expulsion. I think that this would have been a more appropriate measure.

One good thing has come from this i feel: People are again reminded that there is still a great deal of segregation and racism in the south. I read an article on the Jena 6 protests and it highlighted what caused everything. The reason the nooses were hung was due to a black student sitting under a "white tree." The author of the article had this to say:

"And yet, all along, Jena has had a better symbol for civil rights on offer. The anonymous black students who defied the informal segregation at the high school and sat under the perversely misnamed "white tree" are the movement's true legatees. They have received so little attention that I don't even know their names or how many such brave and defiant young people there were."

If anyone wants to read the whole article it's here: http://www.slate.com/id/2174600/fr/flyout
