bipolar,mania
My son was recently diagnosed with bipolar with manic episodes.  He has been in and out of mental institutions having escaped from the last one.  He was subsequently put on 900 mg. of lithium and 3mg of invega.  He has dropped out of college, bought a store and exhausted his life savings.  He sleeps around the clock and claims his meds are robbing him of his energy and desires.  He wants his life back and said to me that he would rather be dead if he cannt live.  Can any one help me.  He is just days away from going off his meds again.   ANY ADVICE< ANY ONE????

I really really wish I had some words of comfort or encouragement, but I have none. I've never been in your situation. I will however send you lots of good thoughts. I hope that you get the answers that you need.

My sister was is bipolar and in a very similar situation to your son. We persuaded her to check herself into an institution for awhile. They finally got her on the right mix of meds. But now she is going downhill again, sleeping, being irrational, etc. I guess my point to this was that I know how hard it is, and it makes it even harder when they do not want to listen and take their meds. Good luck.

I can relate to your post because I have a loved one who has been diagnosis with this illness. It is the hardest and most difficult path to walk because many times you will feel alone. I would suggest a lot of prayers (they do work) and a lot of practical advice, like contacting his doctor and explaining the fact that it is possible the medication is too strong because he is feeling weak and without energy and that should not be. Join a mental health group like National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) for they have meetings and help for families who are facing this type of problem. The website is www.nami.org - I hope this helps.

Id also like to thank srd, you gave us alot of useful info...I also have a loved one with this and I can not convince this person to seek help, sleeping around the clock is not normal and the person is very irrational too just like your son, and its so sad, and I am fighting a loosing battle cuz eveyone is in denile.

i am really sorry about your situations
i'd preciate to kmow if your son has any interests. eg, fishing ,walking or something like shooting
if so, can those help him calm down
whatsmore you can also do something ,give him more smiles or music may do something
Do hope your son's becoming better
Hope you be happy once again

thank u so much kettycat. my son has gone off his meds. he is a marathon runner which only adds to the problem. once he starts to run, i am afeared he wont stop. i was successful last night in giving him 300 mgs of lithium but he is suppose to be taking 900 mgs and the invega. now i can only look for the warning signs of a manic episode and pray. it is comforting to know how much everyone in here cares. thank u all

I also have manic depression. Let me tell you, it is a disgusting disease. Even more so, nothing you say or do is going to effect his set decisions unless it effects his freedom as well. People like us act on impulses, we're not mean, stupid people, we just really don't think before we act. And because of our over used creativity, we can come up with some pretty crazy ideas and philosophies. I was in the hospital (well, mental insitution) not too long ago for attempting suicide, and when i got out, the thoughts of killing myself were still there. They're still there now. For people like us, it's not always wanting to die because our lives are that horrible, we're pathetic and help less. It simply makes sense to us that when all else fails, god gave us thumbs for a reason. And it's quite easy to remove yourself from a situation such as life. All i can tell you is that he needs something to look forward to, the thought of having a child was what stopped me from wanting to commit suicide, maybe he needs a reason to stay here, sometimes thats all life needs...

I think you received some good advice here, I pray God sends you whatever you need. This entire situation is so tragic for all involved. Remember to take care of yourself so you can help him and keep looking for answers just like you are doing. Good luck.
