| Get the F*** outta my bar!
|
|
|
I'm curious about the majority opinion on this...
Me, my husband Philip, my bests friends Daniel and Amanda and their friend Chris all went to a bar this past weekend after the superbowl.
I don't drink, I'm the designated driver. Philip is already trashed from the superbowl. So we aren't drinking.
Chris is so excited that the Giants won that he tells Daniel and Amanda that he will pick up their tab. So the three of them are drinking and we are all having a good time when I hear someone yelling behind me "Get the fuck out of my bar! Get the fuck out!" I look around and the bartender is yelling at Chris and Daniel. ???
So we all leave and I ask Chris and Daniel what happened. The story is: Chris got the tab, which was $55, and purposefully didn't leave a tip. The service wasn't bad or anything, he just didn't tip, so the bartender kicked him (us) out.
I agree with the bartender, I would have kicked his ass out too. But Chris obviously disagrees, citing the fact that he was a paying customer and tipping is not "mandatory". Amanda thinks he should have tipped them, but we also shouldn't have gotten kicked out.
Thoughts?

Getting kicked out was extreme. He should have remembered your faces and maybe gave you horrible service next time. I have never been in the waiting business but I feel that tipping shouldn't always be manditory. If they want to make more, charge more or get a different job.

Former bartender weighing in here: I don't think the guy should have kicked you out. That was inappropriate. However, servers/bartenders only make about $3.00 per hour. They survive on tips. If the service wasn't bad, the beer was cold, the drinks were good...there is no excuse for your friend to NOT tip. If he can drop 55 bucks on a bar tab, 5 more wouldn't put him in the poor house and you could have stayed in the "pour house"! Also, did you know that TIPS is an acronym for "To Insure Prompt Service" Just some useless info for ya. (Way back when people used to tip BEFORE they were waited on, hence the name). Tell your friend that Tipping is not a city in China and to hit the hip next time.

We dont have tipping in the UK, and the wages aren't that great...what your bill is, is what you pay. I think that's much better - if you get great service, you can leave a tip but its not expected...I think thats better and far less uncomfortable. Getting chucked out is a bit harsh though! If its not madatory surely that suggests an element of choice? Or is it just that there APPEARS to be a choice. Either way...how embarrassing.
How crap that in a country like America, where the economy is supposed to be so wonderful...people are expected to live on 3 dollars an hour. Wow... xxx
