June 23 dawns and I wake with excitement. This is the day I've been waiting for for almost 3 months. I would finally get to meet in person the man and former classmate that I'd been corresponding with via e-mail and phone since March 20. I leap out of bed and after taking my meds and my usual morning routine, I jump in the shower. Don't want to meet someone special smelling like less than a rose. I shower quickly and as the water trickles down my back, the anticipation builds.
By noon, my stomach has spiders in it again and boy are they jumping! I reflect to my conversation with George's wife Carolyn a week previous to this. She told me about how frazzled she was on their first date. This has to be good, I think to myself.
At 12:25pm, the phone rings. It's him.... he's on my road! This means he's actually going to show up!! Praise the Lord. I try to calm the quiver in my voice and hang up, watching him emerge from the vehicle. He's standing on my deck, and like most people, is trying to decide which door to use...
I open the patio door and walk out.. "Hey!" I call out.
Hello." he smiles back. "Ready to go?'
"Gotta leave a note for Mom. Come on in." He follows me inside.
Conveniently, Mom has a doctor appointment this day. She isn't home. I am both grateful and disappointed. I would love for these two to meet.
I leave Mom a quick note then grab something from the living room. "Is this your father?"
He is referring to the 16 x 20 picture of my father along the right side of the room. "Yes. That's Daddy."
I hand him two books, one of which is Ted Dekker's Three. We are both avid readers and many conversations have revolved around books.
His eyes light up. "I LOVE Ted Dekker. I don't have this one."
"It's quite riveting. You will love it. "
"Cool." I also hand him the poems I'd written based on his blog. "These are for you to keep."
Then, I grab my purse and say. "I'm ready."
Minutes later, we arrive at The Meeting Place, a local Christian coffee shop.
We quickly find a table and soon our food arrives. Although my stomach is in my throat, it does look good. Time passes quickly as we chat our way through lunch. I find out that we both have some issues that we need to work on. I also learn that neither of us wants children. This is a relief to me as many guys marry only to have kids. This one isn't like that. He has a few issues but nothing that time and God can't take care of.
After lunch, we move to the church where he's working for the summer. We go to the basement and he plays for me, including some never recorded stuff. I sit on a platform on the other side of the room and let my mind wander and my soul eat as his rich vocals wash over me. This guy has an amazing voice. It's everything soothing in distress: honey, ocean sounds, a bird's nightsong and the grace of a loving God. Oh, on the way to the basement, I learn that both of us love the darkness. Score another point.
We briefly meet my best friend David at Burger King. He looks like a glow in the dark halo as we walk up to him. After a brief chat, we part and my date drives me home. When we pull in the driveway, he says "I"m glad we were able to do this today. It was a blast. Call me and we'll do it again."
"Or," I interject," you can call me. I don't have to do all the calling here."
He chuckles. "I will."
I extend my arms. "Okay. Come here."
He reaches over and puts both of his arms around my shoulders and hugs me tightly to him, though too briefly. I feel a warm sensation go up and down my back. Like someone just wrapped me in my favorite blanket. Then, we pull away and I get out of the car. "Thanks for this." I say tentatively.
"No problem. It was my pleasure."
I walk toward the house and watch his green Buick disappear down the road. My head feels like a balloon that is elevating into the air slowly. I hang onto the feeling as I make my way back into the house and into reality. |
