Suining (simplified Chinese: 遂宁; traditional Chinese: 遂寧; pinyin: Sùiníng; Wade-Giles: Sui-ning, should be pronounced as Template:P=Xùníng) is a prefecture-level city within mountainuous Sichuan province in the Southwest of China. Suining was appointed a municipality under direct leadership of Sichuan province in February 1985, it covers Chuanshan District, Anju District, Shehong County, Pengxi County and Daying County with an area of 5,320 square meters and a total of 3,750,000 population, mainly Han nationality and other 42 minority nationalities as well.

In east Jin dynasty Emperor Mu (A.D.347) Hengwen suppressed insurgence in Kingdom of Shu, abandoned Deyang, and set up his capital in Suining instead. It managed Tongnan, Suining downtown, and Pengxi county with its country governmental office set up in Longfengchang. Dated back to north Zhou dynasty (A.D.557), Suizhou Shishan prefecture was founded, since then Suizhou was called. Over the past 1,000 years, Suining had been a capital of prefecture, county, state, province, region, and area.

Suining had been the political, economic, and cultural center of Sichuan province and renowned for “Large City of East Sichuan”, “Important Town in Sichuan”, and “Little Chengdu”. Now, Suining is a “National Hygiene City”, “The Excellent Tourism City in China”, “The National Garden-like City”, “The Provincial Model City of Environment Protection”, “The Provincial Civilization City” and “The National Excellent Model City To Keep Public Order Through Comprehensive Measures”. The motto of “Marvelous Suining, the Hometown of Guanyin (or Kwan Yin), the Capital of Love and the Best Destination of Tourism” has become a name brand of tourism in western China for the tourism attractions.

Suining is a key city within the Chengdu and Chongqing Economic Zone which takes a favorable position.

Climate

Suining has a subtropical zone climate with wet monsoon. The annual average temperature is 17.4 ℃ . There is no frost for 300 days a year and the annual precipitation is 927.6mm.

Location

Suining is located in central part of Sichuan basin. As lower reach of Fujiang river,it is with Chongqing, Guang'an, and Nanchong on east, Ziyang on south, Deynga on west, and Mianyang on north. And it is 140 km away from Chengdu and Chongqing respectively.

History

Suining, as Deyang County in 200 AD. In east Jin dynasty Emperor Mu (A.D.347) Hengwen suppressed insurgence in Kingdom of Shu, abandoned Deyang, renamed it as Suining in 347 AD and set up his capital there. It managed Tongnan, Suining downtown, and Pengxi county with its country governmental office set up in Longfengchang. Dates back to north Zhou dynasty (A.D.557), Suizhou Shishan prefecture was founded, since then Suizhou was called. Over the past 1,000 years, Suining had been a capital of prefecture, county, state, province, region, and area.
At the very beginning after the founding of People's Republic of China, Suining was appointed the prefecture capital, under which there are 9 counties, i.e. Suining, Pengxi, Shehong, Santai, Yanting, Zhongjiang, Anyue, Lezhi, and Tongnan etc. It was merged by Mianyang in October 1958. Suining was established as provincial city in 1985, has been a political, economic and cultural center in Sichuan.

Economy

In 2001, its GDP stood at RMB12.823 billion and witnessed 8.3% of annual growth compared to the year of 1985 when the city was established, of which manufacturing industry increased 13.9%, agriculture 13.9%, and service sector 14.1% with a ratio percentage of three sectors in GDP 33.1：33.0：33.9. Its local finance generated RMB 464 million while the city has a total of 2,600,000 labors and 300,000 surplus labors. Its social deposits totaled up to RMB 12.31 billion, its balance of loan was RMB 8.49 billion and the difference between deposit and loan was RMB 3.82 billion. Average income of active employees was RMB 7,460, RMB 4,791 can be disposed by residents in both counties and towns. Residents in both towns and counties can spend RMB 3,400 averagely while farmers' net income reached up to RMB 1,950. Rural people can dispose RMB 1,676 for their living expenses.

Suining is a juncture between Chuan'e road and Mianyang-Chongqing road. Chengdu-Nanchong expressway and Dazhou-Chengdu railway go through the city. Chengdu-Shanghai trains pass by the city. Suining-Chongqing speed railway has been built. Suining extension of Nei-Kun railway and Suining expressway also are under construction. The programmed Guangzhou-Guiyang-Chongqing and Sanghai-Wuhan-Chengdu express railways will turn Suining into an important hub between Pearl River and Yangtz River Deltas.

Major industries

Under the strategy of Developing Industry to build the city , Suining has fostered the prosperous industries of machinery, electronics, chemicals, food , textile and garments. There are six public companies such as Sichuan Tuopai , Star Electricity, Sichuan Meifeng , Sichuan Jinghua, Yinghua of China Textile and Gaojing Food , of which two are China brand and four are famous trademarks in China.

There are 22 large scale chemical factories in the city including Sichuan Meifeng Stock Company, one of top ten national chemical factories, Shengma chemical factory, the largest Petro Chemical factory in southwest China, Tianqi Li Battery, the largest Li battery manufacturing in Asia, an industrial system of petro chemicals, natural gas chemicals and salt chemicals and fine chemicals.

Suining is the manufacturing base of natural gas, chemicals and comprehensive chemicals during the period of Eleventh Ten Year Plan in Sichuan. Natural gas, petro and Li chemicals are priority to develop.

Suining ,as the largest agricultural by-products processing base in Sichuan , has two national top agricultural manufacturers. Sichuan Meining company , one of the three top canned food manufactures in China, Sichuan Gaojing Food company , the largest pork processing base in southeast China and Sichuan Topai Company , the distillery of most annual output in China . The advanced planting , breeding and reproduction industry , processing and distilling food and oil processing system is established Beverage , food and breeding in large scale are priority to develop.

Suining ,as the textile base of Sichuan , has the biggest productivity in southwest China. There are Huarun Jinghua and Huafang Yinghua public companies, a complete textile industry system of chemic fiber , textile, silk , dye , embroidery and garment textile machinery has been established. The fiber trim , garment and domestic textile are priority to develop.

The machinery industry is developing quickly and an industrial group represented by Keweida Autos , Enbi Zhongsheng Bearing Pad , Fuiji Motor. The industries of automobiles and components and agricultural machinery process are taken as priority to develop.

Micro-electronics and photo-electronics industrial parks have been built which contain the industrial chain of circuit board, photo diode, triode, encapsulation, test, closed circuit, chip, neon lamp manufacturing . This is an electronics manufacturing base which is developing fastest in southeast China to build micro-electronic manufacturing base under the support of Chengdu and Chongqing research and development center.

Economic zones

Suining Economic Development Zone located in the northeast of the city, covering an area of 32 sq km, the economic development zone has railway station, cargo terminal and bus station which is an important development area for logistics, electronic manufacturing, medicine manufacturing, real estate, financial service, warehouse and transportation. Electronic manufacturing is priority to develop.

Suining New Creation Industrial Park located in the south of Suining, covering an area of 22 sq km , it is key industrial investment zone in Suining . Machinery, natural gas chemicals, food, building materials and comprehensive industry are priority to develop.

New Hedong Area of Suining located in the east of the city, covering an area of 7.36 sq km for the first phase, it is used to develop education, real estate, and tourism and photo electronics.

Industrial Logistic Harbor in West China located in Jingjiagou of southern Suining, covering an area of 18,7 sq km under program , it has entrance for the around the city expressway and Chengdu-Chongqing expressway , Suining railway station . It is programmed as an area of comprehensive logistics , residences, processing and warehouses , industry and commercial business . The logistic harbor can benefit Suining and radiate to Chengdu, Chongqing , southwest China and the coastal areas.

Education

There is an institution of higher education and 1610 schools of various levels containing more than 660.000 students in the city. An educational system is composed of higher learning, elementary education, vocational training, and adult reeducation has been established.

Chinese is the official national language, and thus the primary language taught in schools. But English is a part of school curriculum. Most teachers speak Putonghua (Standard Chinese) in their classes.

Culture

Suining boasts a number of celebrities and high calibers. Poet Chen Zi'ang (A.D. 661-702) was a native of the Suining area in early Tang dynasty. Chen Zi'ang wrote "Recall the endless emotion between sky and earth, lonely shed tears", creating a generation of poem style. Knowned minister Zhang Penghe in Qing dynasty inscribed "My incorruption is incomparable in the world". Also well-known woman poet Huang'e in Ming dynasty, poet Zhang Chuanshan in Qing dynasty, and Monk Zou in Tang dynasty who carried on rock candy production skills all left their feet prints on the piece of land.

Suining, as the hometown of Chinese calligraphy and dragon dance, has four national key cultural relics’ protective units, one national non-material cultural heritage site and 12 national artists.

Because Suining is the Hometown of Guanyin (Kwan Yin), so the especial culture of the Goddess of Mercy has become a part of native culture. And Guanyin Stitch is a famous handicraft there.

Resources

Suining is subject to hills terrain, which accounts for 82.4%. Its sea level is anywhere between 250 and 275 meters. Suining claims an arable area of 182,000 hectare. It is abundant in petroleum, gas, salt resources and water energy.

The natural gas field in the area , as the second largest natural gas fields in Sichuan, has a gas reserve volume of 300 billion m3 and the annual output is more than one billion m3. Two national natural gas pipes go through the industrial park of Suining to provide sufficient gas supply.

4.2 billion ton of quality yellow salt has been proved to be reserved in the area, of which 800 million tons are exploitable.

There are 46 rivers in the total area, of which Fujing River flows through the city. The annual average flow is 450 m3 per second. There is also a lake (Guanyin Lake) at the center of the city, covering an area of 14.8 sq m . 410,000 KW hydra power can be generated. The current annual electric energy generated is one billion KW. The national and the local grid systems can jointly generate energy of 8 billion KW annually. One transformer substation, six transformer substations of 220kV and 30 transformer substations of 110KV have been established.

Tourism

Suining is a “National Hygiene City”, “The Excellent Tourism City in China”, “The National Garden-like City”, “The Provincial Model City of Environment Protection” and “The Provincial Civilization City”. There are delicate and splendid Jinhua Mountain, grand and clean Chicheng Lake, a-thousdand year ancient temple, Guangde Temple (No.1 in west China), and Baofan Temple etc. in the area, which attract hundreds and thousands of tourists at home and abroad.

Eight Wonders In Suing

Dead Sea of China
The original Dead Sea in Israel is located on the world's 30 degree north latitude. It is the saltiest and most mineral-laden body of water in the world. The buoyancy and warmth of the water has everyone floating. Its health promoting thermo-mineral springs and world famous cosmetic black mud has been praised by visitors for a long time. The Dead Sea of China is also situated on the world's 30 degree north latitude. The bittern water which is extracted from 3,000 metres under the ground can maintain an outside temperature of 40 degrees Celsius all year round, after the natural cooling and desulphurization process. This creates a unique Dead Sea hot spring in the world. There is also cooling sea water available in the man-made beach with automated waves. Guests have 24 hour access to the water activities. However, there are other forms of entertainment available. These include western-style stage performances, such as dancing, singing, juggling, acrobatics and fire-eating.

Zhuotong Salt Wells
Daying Zhuotong salt production technology - father of world drilling was considered as the Fifth Invention of China. As many as 18 wells are still well preserved to tell visitors a true ancient story.

Longfeng Valley
Longfeng Valley is also called as the World Jurassic Park, but its real name is Shehong Silicified Wood National Geopark. Any considerable amount of dinosaur has been found there. 2010 Eighth International Jurassic Meeting will also be convened there, and it is the first time that this event hold by an Asian country since its inception in1984.

The Satellite Recovery Base
Because of the special latitude and longitude, Suining has become the satellite recovery base of China. Most satellites which were launched by China have landed on and have been recovered accurately there.

Guangde Temple
Given the name of NO.1 Buddhist Temple in West, the China Royal Monastery, Guangde Temple is famous for its Tang Dynasty-style buildings. There are Imperial Edict Hall, Nine-dragon Monument, Jishan Tower, Myanmar Jade Carving Buddha and Guanyin Seals given by Song and Ming dynasties emperors. This temple complex of well-preserved Tang Dynasty-style buildings covers more than 20,000 square meters land and has been listed as a national key protection unit by the State Council.

Lingquan Temple
A shrine to the Guanyin, Lingquan Temple has been a Buddhist sacred land for more than 1,000 years. There is a spring inside Guanyin Hall in Lingquan Temple known as Guanyin Holy Water. Though it runs for thousands years, it has never been dried up. So more and prilgrims got there and drink its holy water.

The Porcelain Museum of Song Dynasty
Suining has the only professional porcelain museum of Song dynasty in China. More than 1,000 state-level cultural relics are well preserved in this museum, most of them are rare old treasures. The Lotus Leaves Porcelain Pot is one of the treasures of the three major Chineses porcelain.

Baofan Fresco
The ancient Oriental painting, Baofan Fresco is named as Sacred Oriental Painting. The description in the book History of Chinese Painting said that it can be compared with the Dunhuang Frescoes because of its endless beauty.

Transport

Suining is the second largest traffic pivot in Sichuan Provice. It connects many cities in defferent directions. The complete traffic network almost had been established. Suining enjoys convenient transport, it is about 140 km away from Chengdu, Mianyang and Chongqing respectively.
