 Safe Driving
Having been a teacher of Safe Driving for Seniors for quite a few years, I thought I might pass on some ideas to a larger group.
One of the questions I have asked the students is, "What piece of equipment on your car is not for you?"
This usually gets responses from surprise to annoyance. "Why am I paying for a car and not getting what I paid for?"  Now that I have their attention (and yours too, I hope) I tell them. The Directional Signals.  You know you are going to turn, or change lanes.  The Signal is for the other drivers to have time to respond to your planned move.

When you don't let them know, they climb up your back as you slow down to turn, or they start to honk when you come into their lane without giving them the safety and curtesy to adjust.

Try it !  It will quickly become a habit and increase safety for everyone.

This is only my second blog, so if I'm not quite with it, give me a little space. Someone sent me a notice that he/she wanted to be on my list(?) I don't know what I am supposed to do. Tell me. Everyone is welcome.

hi. i just wanted to say that you are as excellent on your second post as i am on my 700something post. blogging is singularly individual. i hear you on the aloneness thing in your other post. but it isn't, really. i dated a blind giirl in high school who talked about "seeing" things. and she really did. there are about as many fakes online as offline. and also about as many excellent folks. i have posts that get almost no views. and i have one right now with 230 views, but that is the highest i have ever gotten. write for YOU and your readers will come. see ya. -Buck

Welcome cogitator! About your question of the friends list- If you read a post,or two that you like, and you would like to follow that persons future posts, you can request them to be a friend. They can accept or deny. If you accept, then their recent blogs will show up on your friends list. That is how I came here because I saw Allthingsbuck left a comment and I followed.
As a retired truckdriver,I can say my #1 complaint was people who didn't use,or used their signals too late. And the law blames the one following if there was contact. You are right- It has to become a habit. Thanks.

Cogitator..Nice little reminder there. We all need to be more aware of our fellow drivers. :)

Roe, honey! Go blog on your own site, you silly girl :P

Hiya cogitator! I LOVE your name! I must admit I have been known to mutter less than eloquently under my breath at non-signallers. To be honest, there may have been the occasional gratuitious bird-flippage as well, but THAT sort of thing I gleefully blame on ET (my evil twin).

Welcome to Thoughts!

I am sorry that YOU single out older people, just take a look at some of the YOUNG drivers you just wonder where they got their licence from, was it at "BIG W"
I'm as you call it an older driver 75 and I have not had an accident for years as I know that the way I drive is to show others just how I want them to treat me.

anyway have fun on the thoughts. catch you around another time

God bless you and safe DRIVING watch out for the old ones.

Hi cogitator! Welcome to Thoughts! I happen to be a stickler for road rules and putting on your blinker 500 feet if possible before you turn... hehe I feel like tossing Drivers Ed books at A LOT of people some days. This is a great reminder! :)

If you want to add a friend click on the icon up top and then when you see their screen name click on the drop down menu click approve or deny. Then another menu appears where you can classify what type of friend they are, and then wait a few minutes and you will see them appear as a friend. Take some time and explore the site.

You are the CEO of your blog -- do and say whatever you want. There's no right or wrong way -- just your way. Peace.

p.s. I always use my turn signals and wear my seat belt :)

Cogitator. . .great name and welcome to thoughts. I've been AWOL on thoughts for a couple of months--it's just the flow of life around here, but I do read daily and would like to add you to my friends list. What you wrote here is a great reminder to us all. I'll probably end up sharing it with my students.

Nice post actually. Too often us seniors get to thinking we 'know it', but then comes along one such as you who has the eyes to see something new, something different that makes us think. Well done!

Good post. I will say that this depends on where you live. When I lived in Miami, if you put on your signal they would accelerate so you could not get in. I hated it!

I can smile at this cause I always, always, signal well in advance. Where I live I have to turn off a main arterial route so I give plenty of notice so they don't drive right up my boot. By the way, in Ireland we have boots, not trunks.

Boots and Funnyman are so right!wise bloggers!...don't know why in the world I can’t make a long or short story short? However, ah ha, I made the wordy evidence disappear in a blinker! gave no warning! We all know…that’s another story! Great post Cog!
Waiting and waiting and waiting for another!

I live in South Florida,
and I don't know if drivers are young or old, but
a lot of them seem to think that the rest of us on the
road are mind readers!! And then, if you hesitate for
a millisecond at a stop light, they lay on the horn!
I just had that happen today!
I wish everyone drove as perfectly as I do....

You remind me of what my driver instructor told me long time ago...."Look both side mirrors and back mirror.....When it is OK then turn the blinker on etc, etc....:)

If you only get a honk or two there, then you are lucky. Here in Aussie you'll get middle finger or oral abuse from open window, and very often it is not just because you did something wrong, but for trying to keep up with the speed limit.
:o)

Not using a turn signal is a HUGE NO NO with me. I have been known to give the "drivers salute", when folks switch lanes without signaling. Drives me batty, and I already have enough miles on my broom!

You sure did get my attention! I hate when when ppl just don't turn on their directional signals! As a teenager (already a newbie on the road) It freaks me out! Especially on a highway! So thanks for spreading the good advice :)

I definitely signal, even in the parking lot! Old habits die hard :) I agree with most, blog for you, for no one else. This is a great site with some wonderful people! Welcome, Cogitator!
