OMG! Something bad happened in town. There must be twenty sheriff's cars there. Fifty!
I hear there was a "swat action", and "I heered sombody died".
The students arriving to the High school gathered in clusters to hear the latest. No one knew for sure, consensus was a "big bust" had gone down. But so many cars? There were only three sheriff's cars parked in town, ever. Where had they come from, and WHY?
"It happened on Pinetree, or maybe Elder, but its all blocked, so who lives over that way?
"Nobody who goes here, but some kids from the middle school "This from lanky fifteen year old Ken Leonard, who sometimes lowerd himself to spend a saturday playing video games with eleven year old Jared, Andy's youngest. And he wasn't eager to admit he "liked" Djenna, Jared's twelve year old sister. It was a drug bust, he was sure, and 'whatever', it weren't none of his business.
Classes began as usual, but the proximity of the substation kept the kids rubbernecking every time another official vehicle whizzed past the windows. Lights flashing, but no sirens.
At eight thirty, Mr. Rhodes, in math, went to find tape. He taped newspaper over the windows, so at least some people could concentrate . In the other classes teachers bolted for the 'break room' leaving students to "read the next chapter". Which was hard to do, as they were plastered at the windows.
Kimmy was in the math room, and still coudn't concentrate with Nic still out, and all the goings on. This morning, the main roads were clear, but a few of the side roads were blocked, including the cross street to Nic's .
From Kim's house to Nic's it was an easy cut across a field, and a step over a bent wire fence. But on the road it was a half mile down, and of course, a half mile up. I should have cut over to see why the phone is just ringing, she thought on the way to school, and then she saw the road blocked. Fear, and rejection of fear tormented her day.
C'mon, don't be a hysterical wuss, she told herself. Nic doesn't do drugs, and for sure, neither does her Mom.
The day wound slowly, a strange expectation in the air. Lunch was lonely, the afternoon, an eternity. Teachers went through the start of classes , taking the roll, getting students started on something or other, then finding an excuse to leave the room, and huddle around a police call radio belonging to a school resource officer. He had left dramatically, when no real information was being transmitted. And came back later sulky, because he had not been allowed access across the barriers, not informed either, treated same as a civillian.
Here he was, "an officer of the law too, by God!", and kept out of the loop.
Curious townspeople ambled up to the roadblocks, and were shooed away. The local 'media' the weekly newspaper editor/ real estate agent stood his ground for the amendment rights, unsure of which they would be. When the school officer didn't get anymore information than he did, he huffed off to sit in his car. The officer stood around a while , then left feeling totally dissed. He drove back to the school, mortified to have nothing of news to share.
School finally, mercifully was out. Kim, grabbed her packpack, and started for her daily walk determined to go see about Nic. Ty, seeing her, chose to peel off from his gaggle of middle school buddies, and accompany her for a change. They stepped out of the school gate and were surprised to see Dean, in his propane truck.
He looked tired, sick, and pale, and old.
Kids, something really, really bad has happened. |
