Forrest Gump best sums up this latest rant of sorts, when he said, “I don’t know if we each have a destiny, or if we’re all just floatin’ around accidental like on a breeze. But I think maybe it’s both, maybe both happening at the same time.” I think that this is a concept that at some point in life that we ponder: is life random or is it somehow pre-constructed and our future has already been determined? Or is life a series of coincidences that somehow intermingle to put us on a particular course? Questions like this have been debated by some of the greatest minds in history and at the same time the common man; funny thing is that they never found out the answer until the end of their lives and were unable to tell us. In a sense, this is a concept in which all of us, regardless of all our differences will never find out until our own ends. But one can sure wonder.
At this current juncture in life, I am convinced that our lives are ordered by coincidence. I’m sure that one could make the religious argument that somehow God is involved in the grand scheme of our lives. But I believe that this conflicts with the reality of free will; we all make our own decisions that put us where we are today and where we will be tomorrow. One can also view the past to back up the coincidence argument. One of the best “plot lines” that I have ever read in regard to a movie is from “Butterfly Effect” which is “change one thing, change everything.” This truly makes one ponder what if they had done just one little thing different in life; where would they be today? You can call paradoxes like this regrets, but I’m talking about more generic things. I sometimes wonder to myself: what if I had gone to a different school 5 years ago; would my life be drastically different than it is today?
Then again, maybe I was meant to go where I am today and it is a part of the grand scheme in my life. But then again, maybe we just go with what we are given. That is, when people always ask me what I want to do in life, my response is always, “I go where the wind blows me.” We can make what we want out of our lives, but that is no “fun,” at least to me. You can methodically plot your life out, which is fine, but I would prefer to leave things in limbo, otherwise life is too bland. For good or for bad, you do what is natural to you. If the future is predetermined, maybe somehow one realizes that is what you are supposed to be doing. I just find it incredible that one simple event can alter a life’s course and can interwine lives in a whole new way.
