| The older I get, the smarter you always were |
I am amazed at the wisdom of my father. Sit and listen to the summer rain. It is an unexpected symphony. If you have something and someone needs it, give it to them. That will bring you the greatest joy possible. Dad has a simple uncomplicated way about him, and he is truly happy.
I used to love being at the feeding trough, a greedy recipient of his generosity. Then I discovered that he was happier than me.
He would not deny the quest for his own happiness, he has just found it in giving, loving, and being there for friends. Hmmm, perhaps I need to pay closer attention to this sage, while he is still with me.
To all who qualify, Happy Fathers Day…a day after. Hey it’s nice to get one last gift. In my home we celebrate birthdays for a month. Why not? Everybody loves a party.
By the way, dad’s rule! I am so glad I had the benefit of both imperfect parents, even if I did lose it through rebellion for a while. A dad who really strives to love, teach, train, love, lead, impart, love, discipline, listen to and pay attention to his kids is the best kind of father, one who does any of that, is better than a male vacuum, and I’m grateful that my dad really did his best to raise me.
My four sons wrote me Father’s Day cards today, and I tell you, there is no joy greater than when your kids tell you that they love you, and they appreciate your example.
I’m learning that life ends abruptly, and opportunity lasts but a little while. The sad event of the sudden passing of NBC news journalist Tim Russert at age 58 is a testament to that fact. Waning influence is better than no influence at all. I think I’ll take a risk, and really talk to my kids. Happy Father’s Day!
