Our son's first month
After approx. a week in the hospital, our son Aiden was well enough for us to take home.  It had been a miracle - he was brought back to life, his collapsed lung had healed and his situation had improved significantly.  We brought him home and he cried a lot worrying us about his collapsed lung but he never seemed to have any problems.  His eyes were dark brown and so it wasn't noticed immediately but he had slightly different shaped pupils that became more visible as days went on.  We setup an appointment with our family doctor and he setup a subsequent appointment with an eye specialist at CHEO whom we meet a few weeks later (a bit of delays in Canada to see any doctor especially a specialist).  The eye specialist looked extremely concerned at us and told us that our son had a rare form of collaboma - it's a birth defect that affects the eyes.  It turns out, the type that he had brought a high risk that he would have significant sight impairement and possibly even blindness in both eyes.  This type of collaboma often times results in the retinas not even being attached and surgery can help the retina situation (albeit with risks) but no surgery can fix the impairement.  Because Aiden was too young to respond to questions or give us any clear sign as to what he could and could not see we were left in the dark for several months to come as to how bad things really were...  today we know that Aiden sees fine and so far so good - it's literally a miracle and the odds of the outcome we've had is 1 in a million.  He doesn't even need glasses at this point!  Well that's a summary of our first month with Aiden and we've had many challenges since (some equally as scary) but I'll blog about those later... it's very tough to talk about these things and takes time for me to spill out into a blog especially since I'm not much of a writer.  I hope you all enjoy my read and I hope this does help offer some form of support for anyone going through a rough time - hang tight and wait it out - live in the present and try not to worry about the what if's - we're given one life to live and each second that passes is gone forever - don't let life pass you by.  Enjoy and treasure each and every moment whether it's positive or negative.  Often time negative situations are challenges that only make us stronger and more aware of our capabilities and that we can overcome and accomplish anything we put our heads to.

Aiden is now 3 years of age; he was born on Saint Patty's day and will be 4 very soon (March 17th). He is our life - Nathalie and I cherish every moment together with him. He's the happiest little boy and he relieves any and all stress that I have when I come home from work - a tough day is a distant past when I get home and he runs into my arms smiling and ecstatic to be with me.

Congratulations on your baby boy.
The scare with his health, must make everything you have now, that much sweeter.
Having family is everything.
You sound like a very happy family.
Blessings to you always.

Thanks for sharing this. Great post and it shows just what a loving father you are and what a great family you have. I especially like the part about your stress dissolving when he runs into your arms. Looking forward to that myself too.

Peace :)

Don't get me wrong, kids can be stressful too but from my experience, they can also relieve so much stress. What it would be like to be a kid again and to be fascinated by everything, that really astonishes me that he can be fascinated by a new toy, it's almost like adults take these things for granted - I mean I do appreciate when I get something new that's fun but I certainly don't have the flare of a 3 year old :)
