| Our home disaster by Mother Nature
|
|
|
For the record, my house is now literally a piece of swiss cheese.
Disaster recovery teams have been in three times and are still tearing apart walls due to water damage, last I counted there are 5 huge gaping holes in my house without insulation whereby I can literally see my outer walls. The bank sent an auditor in today to see if they can approve a mortgage of $54,000 to help pay for the damages since insurance will only cover part of it. If they don't approve it we're left with no choice but to borrow the money from family and fix it up and then sell the house since we cannot afford to live in it and repay our family in a timely manner.
What are we going to need to do you ask? New roof, new outside walls, new insulation in walls and attic, new drywall, it's almost the worst water damage I've seen whereby the house is still standing and it has happened to us.
I used to enjoy winter - this year has changed me forever - I literally hate winter with such a passion now that if I had enemies I'd actually literally *love* them at this point.
Enough ranting, just had to get it off my chest and let you know how bad winter *really* was this year...
My wife son and I stand victim to Mother Nature... my optimism and patience have had their best test yet and I'm about to break! |

Sorry to hear of your troubles...thats awful. I have a friend that had been flooded out twice within 2 months. It's heart breaking and frustrating. I wish you and your family well. Hopefully this all works out smoothly and quickly.

Thanks for your kind words. What has troubled me the most and leaves me deeply upset is the fact that I've been paying home insurance for 10+ years and when something finally does happen, I'm left with the simple response: that's not covered. What *IS* covered by home insurance??? (BTW: I do have a special binder on my home insurance plan that I pay extra to cover flood damages/sewer backup/water damages as well but it turns out they cover superficial damages which are not very expensive e.g. they'll cover drywall damage but not framing damage, etc.)

You're welcome....Unfortunately if someone is hurt in your home..thats covered...and "some" damages..I had lived in Washington state...luckily I wasn't in a flood area...though we did have tremors...If our house had toppled over due to an earth quake without earthquake insurance...we would of been hard pressed. It's ridiculous what you have to go through once you find out that whatever happened....is not covered. They seem to get us one way or another...you have to carry home owners insurance when you are carrying a loan on your home...only to find out it covers little..its such a shame. Some days it feels like we are all taken to the cleaners.

That sucks to hear that! I don't know how you cope with that and stay sane. As for insurance? I've always felt that it is nothing more than a legal scam. As you say, they will greedily take your money but don't want to ever give anything back, even in an obvious case like yours. Hope it gets all soerted out for you quickly - and you find a better insurance company as well. Best wishes to you and the family.

Thanks for the kind thoughts. I definately agree with you that insurance companies have some items that need legal consideration in the form of a class-action lawsuit to rectify. There are some companies out there that will take care of you but I still don't know how to separate them from the others. I know they have to make money to stay in business; I'm not sure what the balance is to ensure profitability but with the record profits reported every year in the billions of dollars, it's clear to me that they are making decisions purely on greed than on running an ethical and modest to above average profitable business.
