Just around the corner is the start of a new moon cycle.
The start of a new twelve year period in Chinese Astrology.
The year of the Earth Rat.
A rat year is a good time to start new projects
(a house, a marriage, a family, a business, etc.).
It is usually a good year for crops
because a rat is always wherever food can be found.
The rat benefits travellers
(and, unfortunately, thieves--so watch your back).
The rat is a sign of prosperity and ambition.
(But)That prosperity often favors certain signs over others.
For instance, a rat year is good for a rat, a dragon
or a monkey(the three in their triangle of ideal mates)
as well as those compatible with rats.
But, the further you get from that compatibility,
the less favorable the year is for that person.
Those born a sheep, rabbit or pig year
(2007 was a fire pig year)
may have a difficult time keeping up with
the pace of this year
(just as rats, dragons and monkeys feel
suffocated by the slow pace of the years
of the pig, rabbit and sheep).
Those born the year of the Horse
must especially be cautious this year
because the rat is considered the betrayer
of the horse(least compatible/enemy).
However, since the rat is an ambitious animal
and the horse is too(as well as a hard worker),
the horse stays out of trouble if focussed on their work
and remaining vigilant of any trickery/theft.
A horse would be wise to study any financial dealings
extremely closely this year.
The Chinese year calendar proceeds as follows:
Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit/Cat, Dragon, Snake,
Horse, Sheep/Goat, Monkey, Rooster/Phoenix, Dog, Pig/Boar
(RED=Yang, positive, male energy)
(GOLD=Yin, negative, female energy)
[There is so much to analyze in both Western(Aries, Taurus, etc.)
and Chinese Astrology. I cannot possibly satisfy every
interest here. On that note,
I will recommend two books from which I started
my "study" of both astrologies.
"Chinese Astrology Plain and Simple" by Suzanne White
(in which she discusses the interweaving of Chinese
and Western which is not commonly certified)
and
"The Only Astrology Book You'll ever Need"
by Joanna Martine Woolfolk
(which among other things will teach you about the
planets' influences, astrology health and consulting/making
charts).]
In the spirit of the Chinese and the new rat year,
I have compiled a short list of
related sites
to get you in the mood/mode.
Since the rat is associated with food--and namely cheese:
encyclopedia site info on cheese(both edible form and a drug
that became known in 2005)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheese
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheese_(recreational_drug)
everything you want to know; types, milks, textures, etc.
www.cheese.com/
ADA site with recipes, storage tips, etc.
www.ilovecheese.com/
a place to purchase fine domestic and foreign import
"artisan" cheeses
www.artisanalcheese.com/
and, the place where a kid can go nuts without
making their parents join them:P
the home of a rat
www.chuckecheese.com/
AND, for those like me who are a bit of
an oriental culture nut,
here are a few places to get your
rat and other astrology goods as well
as oriental clothing(one of my HOT list items):
www.ancientmoods.com
(if it doesn't work, try substituting "AncientMoods")
