 Poison in the Water Supply
Imagine this, you work somewhere and must drink water every day but cannot bring your own for whatever reason. So, you are forced to drink at the site. But, someone puts something in the water like poison to make it so awful you either have to protest or die/suffer. What would YOU do in that case?

Now, imagine this. This is yet a THIRD venting post for me in one week:P

So, here's the skinny. For any of you who are as unfortunate as me to work somewhere that plays Muzak(thats satellite music fed into a chain of company locations controlled I guess by computers), you may be aware how annoying it gets. Bad enough when they play the same string of songs every day. But, can you imagine(or have you experienced) hearing the same 5 songs every hour of the day and blaring so loud your ears hurt?? That is what I had at work today, and I was ready to throw a monkey mad fit while everyone else--as always--simply takes it in stride. Are you freaking kidding me??? It's hurting my ears and driving me insane!

Don't get me wrong, these are 5 decent songs. But, if you had an IPod with only 5 songs on it and tried to listen all day(at least an 8 hr work day), you try and tell me you would not go insane...now if you can manage that feat and not go deaf(remember, the volume has to rattle the ear drums), try going a full week on those 5 songs. Good luck, you stupid Mkhjjui Fohkke whoever you are. Ya know?:P

So, what do you think? Blackmail? The company trying to be the Pied Piper of Hamlin and drive me out the front doors? Make me quit so they dont owe me severance/unemployment? Cuz I wouldn't put it past this place, and if the corporate offices have access to all cameras and control of the sound system, who's to say my location isn't part of some mad experiment to test and torture people? I swear sometimes I can say something and get a response. Well, I am not taking any chances on my sanity or hearing this time.

Here are my strategies: 1) file a typed complaint via email to whomever I can reach--if they bother to read it. 2) bring/wear earplugs and see how that goes for a day. 3) start a bigger "stink" about it than I did today. 4)hold a "sit in" of sorts...more like a "sit out" as I am at work but refuse to stay in such a noisy area(but there isn't likely a spot that you can't hear the songs repeating or blaring). 5) Submit and quit?? [I'd rather NOT!! Not let myself be forced out like that.]

What else can I do? Sue? Collect a petition?

I have had the same 22 songs on my Ipod for a least a month. Not forced to but I am dang lazy and keep forgetting to change them, when I remember its during the day when I cant do anything about it. :o|

As for the way to change it. Sometimes its hard to get corporates to change their music, but its possible. My sister worked for Palais Royale when she was in HS and had a similar issue. She wrote to the corp office and her "case" was heard. It took a few months before changes were made, but they did rotate more music in and eventually began changing the songs every few months.

Good luck!!

Gee, another high school story;/ That really took air outta the much older tires.

22 songs is a different story. And, I doubt even that many you could listen to every hour of an 8 hour day. I think of all the CDs I collect...and how the family has its Christmas collection...even those I can't stand for more than an hour or so. I guess Im sick of Christmas music...and just as the Holiday Season is about to start...

"It was a long and dark December...on the rooftops I remember...there was snow...":(

I'd either go with the ear plugs or listen to your own Ipod to drown out the noise. Are you allowed to do that?

Please do not yell at me if you don't like my suggestions - just trying to be helpful!!

Why are you afraid of being yelled at?:P Gosh, I am such a mean, scary person. Not.

Thanks for the suggestion/vote. Unfortunately, listenning to an IPod(which I have yet to invest in or feel like loading anything like) is not an option. Part of the job requires being able to hear pages and other messages...which I wish were separate from the music and that the music could be quieted.

well that sucks, I don't have this problem but at my work when you call the supervisors for assistance or transfer calls you hear this DAMNED hold music. I swear I hear it in my sleep and then one day I was watching TV and the damn thing came on a commercial, it's like I can't escape it.

But what do they care? eh.....you pick your battles and battlegrouds. luck to ya!

I know what its like having to listen to the same music over and over again, and it is torture! I'd go to your manager or whoever is in charge and tell them the volume of the music is not conducive to the environment you are working in and you would like the volume to be lowered. I'd also ask the other employees if they have problems with the music, and if so tell boss man you're not the only one. And if that doesn't work I'd try earplugs.
But if and when the earplugs don't work I would totally bring a mixed c.d. to work, hopefully containing music you love and your bosses hate, and break into wherever the music system is and play the cd...highly unlikely that could or will happen, but it would be totally awesome!

P.S. you are cynical, and it's kinda awesome.

Well if you can't listen to your own music then I'd seriously send the complaint!!!!
That is insane. I would tend to think it's some sick experiment! Like the grocery store playing that music that numbs your brain before you make it to the back where they've put the milk on purpose!!!

QuietOnes, I asked all managers present including the head manager. One said she filed a complaint letter, and word was they were ordering a new "box"--whatever that is(and who knows when that will arrive). All managers and many employees told me IU am crazy for getting upset. There are a few who complain, but they wont do anything about it themselves. I seem to always be the rebel with a cause who has to raise holy heck just to make things happen in that sesspool. I learned these same five songs have been repeating at least since Sunday. Now it is Wednesday. I also know I can't put a mixed CD anywhere to change the tunes. If I could, Id prolly get fired for such action. The volume control is just as old and--pardon my french--fucked up. It only seems to go from no sound to full sound even though the dial goes from 1 to 10. I think the whole place is a wreck.

'Daze and Katydids, thanks for the input. However, I find the grocery store mix(which is often the same mix at my job) is less bothersome because it is much softer(the speakers are further up by the high ceiling. And, hold/wait music is no worse than elevator music.

I got caught up here last night, so I didnt get to find my earplugs. I tried finding them this morning at the last minute, but no luck.

Were do you come up with theses topics?

I'm still laughing at Meri's "please do not yell at me..."

I work in a store where they start the "Christmas Loop" on or about October 1st. Yes, I am dreading it. Same deal - it's a satellite feed you can do nothing about. Most normal people just LOVE Christmas music. I, on the other hand, could gleefully perpetrate violent acts at the mere mention of it.

Enough about me :P

Here's my suggestion: Refuse to bathe until they yield to your demands.

Meri's comment had me cracking up.... I pictured her telling him this and then cringing as she awaited the responce lol

I would just try and contact the higher powers

Noise polution is a real thing and you can bring it up in the human resources dept if they have one. If not start emailing about it.

Dougie dude, I thought you were a new girl in town:P What's with the she-wolf?

Uh, UKgirl, it's called...work? Life? Slice of?:P

Nice to know I'm not the only one suffering, Boots:P Yea, dread that holiday Muzak. If I hear that "turkey in the window" song one more time...

I'd try the stink tactic, but I would be bound to be fired, reported or hate myself first:P

If things don't improve, lampoil, I shall carry out with my email barrage(which I already made threat of). I still can't find my earplugs I bought a few years back.

Oh, status report. They fixed the music this morning. However, though the song variety has been restored to its former less-bothersome variety of crap mixed with a few goodies:P, the volume issue is still in play. So, I've been doing my best to avoid the areas where the speakers are playing full blast as if it was radiation...which in a way it is.
