Well that was odd. No two ways about it, it was definitely one for the 'difficult to pigeon-hole' pigeon-hole.
Pitched as a horror that really isn't one is tricky enough, but then throw in some serious psycho babble and you have something that is difficult to manhandle into any form of coherent shape.
Despite it's apparently simple premise, and thinner plot, the film jumps about like it's main meth-riddled characters. This was never about little wee beasties that crwl around under your skin. This was a film about the paranoia caused by the use of various drugs, crystal meth included. If you have seen the opening few scenes of 'A Scanner Darkly' you will be reminded of the itchy shower scene here.
The acting, given the content is perfectly acceptable, though never outstanding. It was never difficult to watch but sometimes the strange jumps in storyline were a little disconcerting. Well done to Friedkin for making something of this, as it was always going to be difficult keeping up the the Exorcist, after all.
Enjoyable enough, but didn't make me itch enough to really be convinced.
