My grandpa told me this weekend that he really feels like God is telling him to join the Mormon church. His only set back, he feels like he would be betraying his Methodist background. He's been attending a Methodist church all of his life. Now I wish that I could've given him some sound advice on whether or not to make this switch but I have no idea what Mormonism is all about. When he attempted to explain to me how they got the book of Mormon it just sounded like a crazy antic someone came up with because it sounded better than "Well, we just made it up, really."
All I got was there was a guy who came over because God told him to... and this was way before Jesus came around. And he wrote these tablets, then God told him to bury them in what would be Illinois some day. Then in the 1800's God told some shmo named Joe Smith or something where to dig them up... so he did. And then at the same time he magically was given something else to translate this lost text that the tablets were written in. So that became the book of Mormon. (This is where I kind of went ooookay... yeah, right.) THEN the previous guy who buried the tablets came to Joe Smith in a dream and took the tablets away from him until a later date. (So these tablets are nowhere to be found because an apparition took them from Joe Smith.)
This telling is not meant to offend any practicing Mormons out there, I'm telling you pretty much what my grandpa said to me and exactly how it sounded to me. I would really love some enlightenment on this subject because I will support my grandpa if this is what he feels is right for him, I just want to know what's going on in that religion. I am non-denominational and do not believe in organized religion, but I am not one to "put down" or belittle any religion that is formed, it's just not what I believe is right. For me, anyway.
So any comments on this subject would be greatly appreciated
