 a moral Quandry
Had a dream....eh...dreams....

In it I am working somewhere...a cafeteria perhaps. I am somehow a shift supervisor or something akin to that type of managerial role. It's late nite, we are closing up for the night.

There are about a dozen or so people cleaning up this place I seem to be working at; me telling everyone what to clean etcetera etcetera. I tell one guy, a young italian kid in his early twenties to clean behind this counter. Something in the dream has him giving me this aura of youthful incompetence.

Behind the counter is a Christmas tree (of all things) with lights going on and off and plugged into an outlet. There, for some reason too, is a puddle of water that is behind the counter, with the tree and the cord in it. I tell this young man to "Watch out for the water, don't step in it. "

To which he replies, "Yeah, Yeah."

To which there are suddenly sparks and a flash of light and this young man goes down. I leap across the counter and see this kid convulsing in the puddle of water, being electrocuted. I pause, unsure of what to do. When another young kid, also italian, rushes up and try to take the other kid out of the puddle; he gets shocked in the process. The kid then unplugs the cord to the christmas tree and the other kid stops convulsing. The kid who was electrocuted is dazed but he recovers. His face is red, and I speak to him for a moment, and he seems fine. I tell him to head home.

Now, the other workers are staring at the hero and congradulating him; I am wondering what to put down for a report. Wondering also if I should have called a paramedic...

The rest of the nite ends without conflict, and everyone leaves, but I sense an unease with me amongst them. After all have left I am standing doing paperwork when the last worker, and older africana gentlemen comes up to me and asks me why I stood there. To which I reply that on television it seems that you are not supposed to touch a person being electrocuted because you will be electrocuted yourself. I was, I explain looking for something to push the kid out of the puddle.......

Now, the dream ends. I wake up, wondering if, in my dream I failed to do what was right, take the chance to save another at my own expense? Did I over think the situation, reasoning out the outcome as the seconds ticked by...? Was I being too rational...? I wonder. But then again, it was a dream.... a dream that bore a shameful resemblance to an experience similar to that that I had, one where I failed, perhaps morally, to come to another's aid...but that is for another time.
