 Habit-Froce chapter 2
Forming Habits
Oops

Now it has been explained that we are creatures of habit and by our habit we exist. So why is it that our habits make us mad, or uneasy? Of course that’s an effortless question to answer. We feel this way about our habits because we truly do not look at ourselves as having habit. Yet we think about our habits, people tell us about our habits, and we come to except the outcome of our habits. But to get right down to the nitty-gritty of it all, it stems from our inability to understand the process of habits. And that in a nutshell explains why we never change our habits.

In the previous chapter I broke down the character of The Philosophy of Habit to show its attributes. Now I want to demonstrate how those attributes work in our lives to form habits. First we have action and you cannot create a habit without action. Even habits of thought require action, which by the way is called thinking. It is by this way and no other that habits are formed, thus producing all things natural and unnatural. Wow I hope that didn’t offend anyone, well on second thought no I don’t. You see in order to understand the habit making process you have to be willing to examine your thoughts, and that can make a person feel uncomfortable. Thinking is the first level of creation, and action is the second.

Next we have nerve impulses, which are formed from the repeated action of a habit. Once formed habits need a means by which they can survive. So it only seems natural that our nerves, which help keep us alive, also, keep habits alive. To bring this into a rational stage of thinking we have to accept that instincts and habits are one in the same. Instinctively we go out to hunt, of course in today’s world that would be to work, and the point is this, we do it to eat, and to have the things we want in life. So then based on reason habits that create nerve impulses to survive also creates instincts, which help us to survive.

Then we have conditioning or circumstances which are the results of nerve impulses. Here we are dealt all measures according to our habits. To explain oops, we have to look at the fact that we are and always will be the sum total of our experiences. Now keeping this in mind, are we exactly what our habits have determined us to be? Yes we are. So then where does the oops come from? By nature we are meant to be progressive beings. Anything that comes between us and that progression has by way of effect a natural tendency to become a negative in our lives. So then this oops is and always will be habits that keep us from reaching our fullest potential.
