In the 6 2/3 innings Brad Penny pitched in the Dodgers' season opener against the Giants, he only allowed 4 hits, none of which drove in a run. The ace went through the Giants' lineup with what seemed like ease. He even drove in a run to top his performance off.
The game was a great opening to a sellout crowd of 56,000 that was equal to the largest crowd in Dodgers Stadium history for a regular season game.
The large crowd was partly due to the celebration of the Dodgers' 50 seasons at Los Angeles. A few Dodgers greats were present at the game. The cast included Tommy Lasorda, Sandy Koufax and Duke Snider, among several others. "I didn't know half of them myself," Kent said of the older baseball greats. "That's how much history the Dodgers have."
The Dodgers' lineup has been an issue lately with who to start where, and who would be placed on the disabled list, but it seems as though that was not an issue in Monday night's game. They won 5-0 and allowed only 5 hits.
Rookie Blake DeWitt came through at third base with a .500 batting average and a double play. Andre Eithier , who will replace Juan Pierre at left field and Jeff Kent at second, who is coming off a hamstring injury, are two more players whose positions were determined at the last minute.
New Manager Joe Torre remarked about his pitchers, "Pitching is what it's all about, and today was a very easy game to watch." Penny was pulled in the seventh inning and received a standing ovation from the fans behind the dugout.
