| Giles turns down third base job

Marcus Giles changed his mind about going to the Dodgers to fill in the third base spot Tuesday. He even got in his car and started to drive to the Dodgers' triple-A camp in Las Vegas before he cancelled.
The Dodgers were pleasant about his decision. Giles' agent said he just does not see himself as a third baseman. He was at second before he got released from the Colorado Rockies.
Rookie Blake DeWitt has been a valuable replacement so far, but Torre said they have not stopped looking for more options.
One option the club has considered is Wes Helms. After releasing Rudy Seanez to the Philadelphia Phillies, the Dodgers hope to sign Helms straight from the Phillies. Helms had a .246 batting average with only 5 homeruns in 280 at-bats last season.
It appears the Dodgers do not want to risk having a rookie as their only third baseman, since the first through third starters are all injured. Nomar Garciaparra says he does not feel comfortable swinging a bat yet, so he will be out for a while. Andy LaRoche is expected to be out for at least six weeks with the recent surgery. Tony Abreu will be sent to rehabilitation for his injured groin.
If DeWitt can stay healthy and continue to make plays and keep up his good batting average, the team may not need to look very far. |
