The Egotist
The egotist billows,
The scholarly know-it-all,
Spreads his aura, atmosphere
Often supercilious and braggadocio
As if to conquer, criticize
Cajoles his offspring
Banters his wife
He mirrors society like a losing craps game
Elevates himself into pontific stature
Biting, wise, offensive, coy
But like a chameleon can cast his charming wizardry
So that we sit in awe, petrified
What gives this pompous ass the right,
To enchant us, to transform us into animals
And make us crawl in
Humiliation and shame
It seems God is his alter ego
Do we really want to be cast in his image?
He is that dangerous caricature
Of who we sometimes
ARE
As his words bounce off
Mesmerized by his forceful rationalizations
Perhaps we will respond in anger
Or applaud
An egotist is in all of us |
