 Today's Bible Study: Genesis 10-12
Hello My Friend/Guest,

It is Friday Janurary 4, 2008 and today we are completing our studies on the book of Genesis. Today we will read Genesis 10-12. In todays lesson we will learn about the descendants of Noah; Babel; the origin of languages; God's call and covenant with Abram and his journey to Canaan and Egypt.

What a time to be alive! After the flood destroyed all of the human race except Noah's family. "Now these are the generations of the sons....By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations." (Genesis 10:1,5).

Among the decendants was a man name Nimrod, Nimrod is the first king mentioned in the Bible. "And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD. And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar." (10:8-10).

With Nimrod as their leader, the people united to build a city and a tower, whose top may reach to heaven. They said: Let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. These words tell us that they revealed their desire for power. The sinful, self-centered human heart seeks a name for itself and has no desire to glorify God. And when God saw this he decided to create several languages so the people are unable to understand each other and everyone scattered to their own part of the world. "And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city." (Genesis 11:3-8).

Just as in the days of Nimrod, today there is a worldwide movement to unite and control all people and all religions into a one-world government and one church. The greatest safeguard against being deceived in this age of lawlessness is knowing the Word of God. It alone exposes the true intent of leaders in world affairs.

God introduces the Hebrew race beginning with Abram (Abraham). Abram had weaknesses, just as we do, that he learned firsthand it's always best to trust the Lord, whether in times of famine or feasting. More than four hundred years had passed since the last recorded communication from heaven. Because of the sinful tendency of mankind, God spoke to Abraham (Abram), asking him to surrender everything to Him and fully trust His leading. "Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came." (12:1-5).

Abram responded to God's call and gave up all that was precious to him. He gave up his country, home, and friends and by faith obeyed God, committing himself to an unknown future. He could not have known that the journey would be more than a thousand miles to the promised land.

Abram endured many years of severe testing and God found him to be a man who would remain faithful and obey His Word regardless of the circumstances. Some Christians are not concerned with hearing the voice of God since they are too interested in hearing other voices.

Abraham's life was one of building altars and communicating with God. Every Christian has the privilege to be known of God as one who consistently reads His Word and prays with a desire to understand His will, and be willing to walk in it.

In this lesson Jesus Christ is revealed as the Promised Seed of Abraham, "And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him. " (12:7). This is in compared in Matt. 1:1. "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham." Abraham was a type of Christ who leads the way to a far better promised land.

Today's Psalm: 132:12
"If thy children will keep my covenant and my testimony that I shall teach them, their children shall also sit upon thy throne for evermore."

Today's Prayer:
Dear Lord,
Thank you for blessing me with a new day and thank you for the many blessings you have given me today. Lord, you have given me the priviledge to be know of You by reading Your Word and talking to you through prayer. Bless me this day with understanding and knowledge of the words I read. Teach me what I am reading and how to apply it to my own life. In Jesus' name, I pray.....Amen.

Have a wonderful day/night. TGIF! Have a great weekend.
God Bless You,
Christina
