Chapter One:
Amy
“Check out the new boy,” Holly whispered to me excitedly. I looked up in interest- we never had new kids worth looking at, not here at Burger. It was a shame, really, the lack of hot guys. It wasn’t like I was out for a boyfriend or anything, but I had to admit, it would be nice to have something to stare at.
“Where?” I replied under my breath. Holly was my twin sister, though we look nothing alike. Where I have long dirty blonde hair, brown eyes and pale skin, she was tall and tan with short dark brown hair and brown eyes. She’d been trying to find a guy for me ever since her boyfriend, Will, asked her out the year before, and I could almost see the gears turning in her head as she pointed the boy out and I got a good look at him.
My first thought was that he was terribly cute- Holly knew my taste all too well. He was tall and pale, skin slightly flushed as he slouched over his book. His brown hair was slightly long, falling in his pretty blue eyes adorably. When I was done admiring his face I turned an eye to his attire. He looked rather fit in a black polo, half unzipped, black sneakers and a pair of blue jeans that I saw, when he twisted to look at the clock, showed off his butt perfectly.
“Oh. My. Gawd,” I hissed to my twin, eyes still fixed on the hot new boy. “What’s his name?”
“His name is Anthony Were, he just transferred from Roth second period,” she gushed immediately, the words coming out of her mouth almost faster than her lips could form them. Probably eager to hook me up, I mused. “He’s really antisocial, I hear. Leo had him in Algebra last period and said he was so smart it was unbelievable! OH Amy, this is perfect! He’d be great for you!”
I frowned and pointedly got back to my book. It was thick with small print, something about elves and dragons and such. Nothing new. But try as I might, I couldn’t focus on the story- I kept sneaking peeks at Anthony out of the corner of my eye. He was hot and smart, but that didn’t mean I had to date him. We could just be friends, and he probably wasn’t interested in me anyways, I thought with a small smile. Not the way I dressed.
Holly and I had the same taste in more than guys. We tended to buy the same clothes and consequently end up dressing the same way, too. Today it was dark blue jeans, my faithful gray sneakers and a stretchy black t-shirt with light gray lightning bolts running up and down it, a big red skull and crossbones on the front. Around my right wrist was a rainbow friendship bracelet that Holly, Leo, Arthur and Will wore as well. Probably not the most attractive clothing on a girl.
The bell rang suddenly, startling me so badly that I jumped out of my seat. Holly laughed and walked out the door without waiting for me- she obviously expected me to go talk with Anthony while I had the chance. I decided to humor her and walked over to where he was gathering his binders.
“Hi, my name is Amy,” I said cheerfully, holding up my hand and wiggling my fingers in a friendly gesture. He ignored me, but I went on. “I heard you were the new kid. It probably sucks switching schools a week into the semester, huh?”
“Not really,” was his short reply, and without looking at me he walked towards the door. Jeez! He really was antisocial. But I wasn’t giving up yet. I followed close behind.
“What class do you have next?” I decided to ignore his attitude problems. He turned and smirked at me with those icy blue eyes of his.
“Umm, lunch,” he said in an amused tone. I blinked and went slightly red. Duh Amy, just DUH! I berated myself.
“Right, lunch,” I said awkwardly, aware that I’d just made an idiot of myself. So much for first impressions. “Who are you sitting with? Any friends here at Burger?” We began descending the stairs to the first floor and the cafeteria.
“Just one, Will Parks. I suppose I’ll be sitting with him.” He looked away again. Will’s name distracted me from my agitation at the pace this boy was setting.
“No way!” I exclaimed. “You know Will? Well, you’re sitting at my table then! I’ll go get my lunch and meet you there, okay?” I ran off without an explanation, leaving Anthony to the lunch line. “Be right back Anthony!”
“My name is TONY!” he called after me in exasperation. I grinned and walked quickly upstairs to my locker, suddenly anticipating lunch. Wait ‘til my sibs get a load of him!
My locker was locked when I got to it. “This has got to be Amber’s fault,” I grumbled, trying to recite the numbers I haven’t really memorized yet. “2... 8... 8...” I say quietly to myself, twisting the metal knob to no avail. The crowds start to thin, and I’m almost alone in the eighth grade hall except for maybe ten or so stragglers. Finally, I kick the door with a yell of frustration, and it miraculously pops open.
“Two words, Amy- anger management.” Leo’s amused voice drifted to my ears. I turned to face him, blushing with a sheepish grin on my face. “Don’t you have better things to do than abuse your locker? Like, say, seducing the new boy...?”
“Shuddup Leo,” I replied smoothly, putting my nose in the air in an impression of our stuck up Social Studies substitute. We both laughed a little and I got my lunch out of my locker and slammed it shut a little more forcefully than necessary. “Race you downstairs,” I offered, and he slapped my hand in agreement. We darted down the stairs and into the cafeteria, breathless and still laughing by the time we took our respective seats at the table, or the Emo Corner as we liked to call it.
“Hey guys, ‘sup?” Arthur asked, leaning on the table with both elbows. That constant grin was still plastered on his face. Despite the fact that he’d been adopted into our family at the age of three and before that was beaten by his alcoholic father, he was always happy and completely innocent at the age of thirteen.
“Raced down the stairs again, did you?” Holly had pried her lips away from Will’s long enough to ask the question, but apparently lack of contact wasn’t an option because her hand slipped under the table to squeeze his. Will smirked at me as I stared in amusement.
“Ooh, there’s Amy’s future husband!” Leo interrupted my reply loudly. I glared at him briefly until my eyes drifted to Tony, who was zoning out at the end of the lunch line. He went to get ketchup for his fries and then stood helplessly, scanning the cafe’ for anyone he knew. I couldn’t resist any longer.
“Tony! Over here!” I shouted, and my heart beat out a strangely erratic rhythm as his eyes brightened and he started to walk towards me. I didn’t know it at the time, but behind me my sibs and Will were grinning and whispering hurriedly to each other. It was just the beginning.
