| Am I Part of Modern Age? Hmm...GUILTY! |
Last week while at work, the server went down (or something like that) and we had to shut down our computers in order for the computer technicians to fix the problem. We asked everyone to please keep themselves busy and try to find something to do while we waited for the systems to come back up. As I looked around, I saw everyone was ‘socializing.’ I asked around to see if they had something to do, but since we’ve become, or are trying to become a paperless company, there was really not much to be done.
As I was looking around and getting answers, I was thinking to myself ‘wow, has the world changed!’ Just some years ago there were things to be filed. Files were updated manually; the computer was more of a way to keep things organized, however if the systems went down, nothing stopped; people still had work to do and having no computer simply meant one less thing to worry about for the moment. However, nowadays, if the system goes down, the whole company freezes. People find themselves doing nothing and we find ourselves without communication to the outside world. Especially in the company I work in; we handle our clients through emails, messenger and some telephone communication. However, out of the three, telephone communication is the least used.
Are all these changes and use of technology good? I’m not 100% sure its good to depend so much of computers. If you think about it, people don’t use their brains anymore. We don’t think, we don’t analyze; computers are the answer to everything. You want to add, subtract and make reports? You have Excell for that. You need to write a letter? Microsoft Words is there, with a template of the type of letter you need; all you need to do is fill in the blanks. You need to notify someone of something? Outlook Express; just send an email to as many people as you want, and your news will arrive in less than 2 minutes. Nothing requires effort anymore! All these is called being part of ‘Modern Age’. The worst thing (to my opinion) is, that each day technology advances and things are becoming easier and easier. Soon we’ll just need to snap our fingers and a full report will be completed!
Do you agree with all these things happening in this so called modern age? Are you part of Modern Age?
Here’s my list of Signs You ARE Part of the Modern Age:
- You try to enter your password on the microwave.
- You haven't played solitaire with a real deck of cards in years. (guilty!)
- You e-mail your son in his room to tell him that dinner is ready, and he emails you back "What's for dinner?"
- You chat several times a day with a stranger from South Africa, but you haven't spoken to your next door neighbor yet this year. (guilty!)
- You didn't give your valentine a card this year, but you posted one for your email buddies via a Web page. (oops!)
- You buy a computer and a week later it is out of date and now sells for half the price you paid. (I hate it when that happens!! UGH)
- Your reason for not staying in touch with family is that they do not have e-mail addresses. (GUILTY!!!)
- You consider 2nd day air delivery painfully slow. (HELL YEAH!)
- Your daughter (or your little sister) sells Girl Scout Cookies via her web site.
And last but not least…
- You read/learn most of your jokes via blogs/emails instead of in person. (all of you reading this blog, raise your hand!!)
Enjoy!
