 Before Classes Even Started
Just a few days after arriving in Egypt, I left my grandmother’s apartment to move into the American University in Cairo dorms. AUC has two sets of dorms. Some on the new campus about an hour outside Cairo in the desert and some near the old campus in downtown Cairo.
I was assigned to the on campus dorms. So, when it came time, I moved into the new dorms, or more like, moved out into the middle-of-nowhere desert.
The only services available out there were the few services offered by the university itself, which hadn’t even completely settled into the new campus. The food options, only one of which was even somewhat Middle Eastern, were all ridiculously overpriced. Only one of the on campus restaurants was open past 6 pm. And the convenience store on campus was smaller than my dorm room.
---
The next day, I moved to the off campus dormitory in the heart of Cairo. From there, I can easily move around the city. Unfortunately, I still have to make the trip to and from campus every day for class, but at least it’s not every time I want to experience Egypt, which in a study abroad experience, should be all the time.
Since then, I’ve done some sightseeing, some English tutoring for my cousins, some family visits, and plenty of aimless wandering around Zamalek (the Nile island region of Cairo where the dorm is located).
